A little Georgia school girl |was
asked for a compoelliuti on "The
Confederate Veteran." A few
days thereafter she handed in the
following: "The Confederate Vet-
eran is one that fought and bled
and died for his country. He is
sometimes on one leg and some-
times on two. The state gives him
enough pension to keep him in to-
bacco. Then the state builds him
a home and sells the home before
he can get in it. My pa says he is
veteran. He was wounded by hav-
ing one leg sawed off in a confed-
erate sawmill while making coffins
to bury soldiers in. The state don’t
help my pa much and my pa says
damn the state!”—Atlanta Consti-
tution.
SERMON ON STINGINESS.
A Missouri exchange gets off like
this: "If there is anything that
gives us a longing tor eternal rest
and deep damp solitude it is a man
who comes to a town or country
buildsup a good paying business
grows rich from the resources of a
prosperous country and then
squats down on his wealth like a
clucking hen on a door knob and is
too Infernal stingy to even let the
gravel grind In his own gizzard.
A real genuine I 8 karat stingy
selfish man cant bo honest and If he
ever gets to heaven and has wings
he will fold them and walk for fear
he might ruffle a plume or lose a
tail feather. The class that builds
up a town or country and enjoys
life and makes the best citizens are
tlie enterprising liberal men who
believe in living and letting others
live and who when they get a dol-
lardon’t squeeze it until tlie god-
dess of liberty feels as if a corset
laced to tlie last notch would feel
more comfortable. Such squeezing
is what causes hard times and stops
tlie circulation of tlie American
Eagle. If It were not for our broad
guaged enterprising men It would
be Impossible to build a prosperous
city. Life would be one big game
of grab and the devil take the
hindmost would be the order of tlie
day.
Encouragement for the Feeble.
So long as tlie falling embers of
vitality are capable of being re-
kindled Into a warm and gonial
glow just so long there Is hope for
the weak and emaciated Invalid.
Let him not therefore despond
Out derive encouragement from
this and from the further fact that
there Is a restorative most potent
in renewing tlie dilapidated powers
of a broken down ayxtem. Yes
thanks to Its unexampled tonic
virtues Hostetter's Stomach Bit
teis Is dally reviving strength In
the bodies and hope In the minds
of the feeble and nervous. Appe-
tite refreshing sleep the acquisi-
tion of llesli and color are blessings

cesses whlcli tills priceless Invlgo-

FLUNKED OUT.
Little Rock and Hot Springs Cham-
pionship Games Abandoned.
Another base ball team has suc-
cumbed to poor patronage. This
time it is that princely patronized
club—Little Rock. Poor old Tex-
arkana that was fired out of the
league by Little Rock tor poor pat-
ronage is still playing ball. Such
is fate.
Friday morning Edwards retired
from the inanageniet and Harry
Peckham took charge That night
Hot Springs went home putting an
end to the championship series
This is too bad. Fort Smith feels
bad because no onp covered our
money. At the time Texarkana
and Fort Smith were kicked out of
the league the managers of both
teams offered to wager that more
than 15 of the Little Rock-Hot
Springs games would not be played.
— Ft. Smith Democrat.
Yes "Dad” Edwards has found
out it takes more than an enlarged
expanse of shirt front to run a base
ball game. He has found out that
Little Rock don’t patronize his
game any better with him and Man-
ager Gray posing as the "Von der-
Ahe's” ot Arkansas than they did
when poor old Texarkana and Fort
Smith weie fooled into a league
with their teams. It is only a just
retribution sent on them for the
scandalous treatment accorded the
two clubs kicked out. We hope all
base ball towns will boycott any
games these two men-—Edwards
and Gray have any tiling do do
with.

A Rattle of Musketry.
Yesterday deputy sheriff Hern-
don of Cass county went to the
Sulphur mills to look for some men
wanted In his county for misde-
meanors committed. He found
three of them in a bunch who on
seeing him jumped from the plat-
form on which they were at work
and made a beeline for their shan-
ties soon returning with their guns.
They fired them off several times
in the air and dared the officer to
come and take them. He of course
acted wise and let them severely
alone. He telegraphed here for
help but our constable being out of
town none was sent him. He came
to the city last night to get help
and we met him this morning. He
said tlie men lie was after was a
tough set and lie feared trouble iu
taking them as one of them had
given out that lie would not be
taken alive. Mr. Herndon will re-
main here until constable Barkman
returns and will get him to hel p
him make the arrests.
