It appears that young George
Gould Ih seeking notoriety of the
"tough" kind. It Is stated that he
attended a banquet given by the
board of trade of New York City
and wore a pistol as a part of his
evening dress.
It was a bright vivacious Pemis-
cot county girl when asked why she
didn't marry replied: "I have con-
siderable money of my own I have
a parrot that swears a monkey
that chews and a stove that
smokes so you see that 1 am not
yet In need of a husband very
badly "
At last a cable Is to be strung
across the great Pacific ocean. If
Is stated that' a cable company has
been formed to be known as the
Pacific Cable Company to connect
America and Asia by telegraph
It will require 11(100 miles of whe to
connect this country with Hawaii
Japan China and Australia.
Editor Homer Prince of the Sear-

to the grand jury at Jefferson City
Mo. against the corrupt lobbyist
iu the Missouri Legislature in
which he used the following lan
guage: "If there was such cor-
ruption it should be hunted out and
punished as there is no crime
which so threatens the rights and
liberties of the people.” Gov. Dan
W. Jones was one of the main lob-

1895 in the Arkansas Legislature.
Strange but true.
PROSPERITY FOR PENSIONERS.
The Nashville Sun is of the
opinion that Secretary llliss' report
confirms the worst fears excited by
Mr. McKinley's call for "more
liberal pensions." The best guide to
what is coming is to be found iu
what we have had in the past:
The last year of Cleveland's.
first term the pension ap-
propriation was $ 89(1(1(1(KM)
Harrison's first year 10650(1000
Harrison's second year 118600000
Harrison's third year 141000000
Harrison’s fourth year 158000000
I ncrease under the last
Republican adminis-
tration $(19000000
The New York World In comment-
ing upon the liliss report gives
some interesting data. It declares
that "the net decrease in Cleve-
land’s second derm was $18250000.
There was a slight Increase In the
last fiscal year all of It in the four
months after the inauguration of
McKinley.
"The number now on the pension
rolls Is 970011 and even Mr. Hllss
owns up to a certain Increase ot
about 100000. Retakes the rosy
view that this addition will add only
$7000000 to the annual appro-
priation. Hut a conservative cal-
culation shows that that the In-
crease will be near $20000000.
"Unless there Is an entire change
of policy the pension appropration
for Mr. McKinley's last year will be
$160000000.
"In 180(1 the pension appro-
priation was $13000000; In 1870;
$28250000; In 1880 $04600(0)0; In
1890 $188250000. That is It has

WEST SIDE COUNCIL.
Mapor Hardin looked over his
mahogany desk last night at the
assembled aldermen and ordered
the roll called.
The tollowing city representa-
tives answered to their names:
Thompson Carmichael Nevu
Ayers Boosh Graves Estes and
Reese.
Messrs (Herland and Munson
representing the Texarkana water
company were present and asked
to be heard in regard to paying a
bill assessed against the company
for causing the damage to the tire
wagon. They claimed the sewer
contractor had caused their pipe to
leak at the point that caused the
wagon the mishap and was in no
wise caused by negligence of the
water company. Alderman Estes
who was appointed to locate (he
blame said he coincided with the
gentlemen who had just finished
and he believed the sewer contrac-
tor should be assessed the dannge.
Our young friends Fred W. Of-
fenhauser the fire insurance agent
and Gus Henry were present and
both put in a bid for the insurance
on the cltv hall. Their speeches
were referred for “translation" and
revision to the committee on such
affairs.
There were others who had axes
to grind ranged around the wall
but the mayor cast a wicked eye
around the hall and called for the
reading ot previous meeting* and
further axe grinding was delayed
until next meeting.
Aiderman Thompson ot the fi-
nance committee who is a close
flgurer said he had found some
small errors in the officers reports
and wanted further time before he
made a final statement
Aiderman Ayers who has a park
of beautiful Howers at the depot
with a gold sign board telling the
traveling public that It is his park
and also who owns a yard of mag-
nificent flowers out on Maple St.
called up (he stock law again and
said lie farmed one even If It went
no further than his home. The bal-
ance of the aidermen all being rural
gentlemen with cattle and some
with dairies we fear Alderman
Ayers progress Is (his direction
will not be wafted very far (We are
with him on the stock law how-
ever.)
Tin l November work on sewerage
was read ami $'118.8(1 was the sum
expended.
Aiderman Thompson by the
permission of the council cremated
a big bundle of canceled city scrip.
Hills to the amount of $129272
was allowed after which the
council adjourned.
