SENSATIONAL MURDER TRIAL
I From Maj. A. H. Sevier we learn
that a sensational murder trial
will come up in Lafayette Circuit
court during this week one of the
defendents in the same a citizen of
Miller county.
It appears that some years since
an old man by the name of Carlton
who lived near Stamps was murder-
ed in cold blood—two men with
blackened faces called him out of
his bouse just after night and shot
him to death also shot a negro
hut he recovered; purpose of at-
tack was evidently robbery as old
man Carlton was known to have
considerable money about the
house but the murderers became
scared for some reason and ran
off without accomplishing their
object. Shortly after the killing
James Reyburn who lived near
Genoa Miller county together
with another man was indicted for
the murder but cases were nol
prossed because no evidence was
found against them.
Some time recently a horse thief
by the name of Vaughn was cap-
tured and in developments testified
against Reyburn of this county
and a man by the name of May-
field who lives near Stamps La-
fayette county charging them with
the murder of old man Carlton
and another true bill was secured
and these two men will be tried for
the crime as stated above. We
learn that there is much excite-
ment and a sensational trial will no
boubt be had.
CHANCE TO GET A FACTORY.
Yesterday Secretary G. A. Hays
of the Board of Trade received a
letter from Kimmons’ Walker &
Co. making a proposition to erect
a hard wood factory here spoken
of heretofore in these columns.
They say if Texarkana will give
them SIOOO in cash and a good five
acre site they will erect a factory
here that will pay out in wages and
for material as much as S2OO to
s4oodo'lars per day and produce a
car load of hard wood shaped
material per day. Formerly said
factory would employ from 25 to 50
men. This certainly seems a rea-
sonable proposition and our peo-
ple should not hesitate to accept of
same.
Mr. Hays suggested that our
Board of Trade and citizens meet
at his office tomorrow afternoon at
3 o’clock to discuss and take action
in the matter. Let there be a
good turn out.
The Golden Gate Limited is a
new train put on the road to catch
the travel and the first one passed
through here yesterday morning
from New York to San Francisco
California and points of interest
between. Some five compartment
coaches were in the equipment of
the train with an observatory car
coupled on behind. Some 40 pas-
sengers on train and we noticed
many of them had snap shot cam-
eras to take views of the different
objects that struck their fancy.
We saw one down easter with his
pants stuffed in his hose chasing a
pig in order to get a photo. He
thought the pig was wild and had
.been driven up to the city by high
water in the bottom. We learn
this train will make regular stated
trips from New York to San Fran-
cisco via way of this place.
Ralph Hughes one of the opera-
tors in the Western Union Tele-
graph office has made a yery credi-
table drawing of the wires running
into the Western Union Telegraph
office and that part ot the wires
making the turn from the Cosmo-
politan Hotel. The wires are all
numbered both at the union office
and the Cssmopolitan hotel
and in case the Western Union
office should burn this drawing
would be a necessity in order to
replace the wires by their number
to proper connections. Ralph is a
handy man with a pen and a bottle
each of black and red ink.

W. H. Brown’s deliyery wagon
while on its rounds last night and
while the driver was delivering an
order at Mr. Jessie Estes some one
robbed the wagon of the balance of ■
the groceries. Mr. Brown thinks
white boysare guilty of the theft.
Rev. C. W. Daniel will preach his
last sermon at the first Baptist
church tonight the congregation
here having concluded to release
him at his request. We all part
with Mr. Daniel with much regret.
He leaves to take charge of the
Baptist church at Pine Bluff under
flattering prospects.
In this morning’s paper Mr. Joe
Murphey announces for re-election
to the office of City Recorder. He
has made a good officer and is en-
titled to a second term. We com-
mend him to the Democrats in the
city and hardly think he will suffer
at their hands.
Mr. R. B. Ayers Train Master of
Transcontimental Railroad reports
more bales of cotton shipped over
his division this year than any
year since the road was built. He
says the Transcontinental railroad
as a freight hauler is strictly in it
and there is no getting around the
fact.
Hon. E. A. Schicker Register in
the land office at Camden Ark. is
a visitor in the city he having been
inducted into office nearly two
weeks since and not having yet re-
moved his family to that city. He
informs us that he is well pleased
with Camden and his surroundings
in general; has splendid office rooms
in the fine new government build
ing recently constructed. We learn
from him that Hon. J. B. Friedheim
the new Register has also been in-
inducted into office. The jwo wilt
make a splendid team to attend to
Uncle Sam's homestead business
and everything will be done right
and in a business wy.
