Anarchists in Europe are getting
next to the royalty ot all countries
save of England.
Russia evidently has not much
faith in her disarmament proposi-
tion as she is enlarging her ship-
building yards and has some forty
ships of war under construction
now. Such action on her part is not
likely to inspire the confidence ot
the other powers
As a rule northern people are now
of the same opinion as southerners
on the race question—that white
men alone are competent and shall
rule every part of this country.
God created the negro inferior to
and below the Caucasian and no
legislation can bring about any sort
of equality.
The Spanish peace commissioners
are sparring for time and our Amer-
ican representatives have given
them until today to say whether
they wish to prolong the fight. If
they do not answer our countrymen
will deliver a well directed blow on
Spain’s plexar and the trouble will
be virtually over.
Let the first act of the Arkansas
legislature be to pass a uniform
text book system for Arkansas pub-
lic schools. Hundreds o' thousands
of dollars are annually wasted by
the parents of Arkansas in buying
all kinds of school books that every
“freak” teacher imagines he wishes
to teach.—Brinkley Argus.
The final conclusion which the
country reaches from the evidence
taken by the investigating commis-
sion is that the soldiers were gross-
ly mistreated. Said commission
waited until after the election be-
fore getting to the worst of the
testimony.
Gov. Dan W. Jones has had him-
self interviewed by the Little Rock
Democrat as to electing United
States Senators the president etc.
by direct vote of the people. Well
and good—but if such method were
adopted it would not get him any-
thing. Berry will succeed himself
as our senator though the two
Jones' Clarke et al oppose him
with might and main.
As we expected the northern
Methodist preachers have been
called by their consciences to reso-
lute on the subject of the recent
race troubles in the Carolinas and
they took the side of the negro of
course. They do this not because
they love the negro more but be-
cause they love the Southern Meth-
odist church less. The most purely
human institution in this world is
the Northern Methodist church.
Its allotment of divine grace has
never been large enough to preyent
It from hating the southern people
In an open and cordial way that al-
most challenges admiration.—Cam-
den Beacon.

Says it is simply “rotten" as a re-
pertoire company. Oper house

dates there after the first perform-
ance when half the audience left

North Carolina is now talking of
enacting a state law disfranchising
the negro. It can not be done out-
right but may be accomplished in-
directly-national constitution giyes
him the right to vote. Agitation
of this question and the recent race
troubles in North and South Caro-
lina oyer the ballot may cause
congress to repeal the amendment
to the national constitution which
gave them the franchise. Republi-
cans are mighty sick of the negro.
The Mammoth Springs Democrat
thus courageously goes for the
rooter and boyine: “It is high time
that the ‘hazlesplitter’ and mount-
ain cow be shut off from the haunts
of civilization and it there is no oth-
er way put them in a pen. The
original Arkansas hog would put to
shame the jungle wild boar of Afri-
ca and any scheme to keep him out
of the streets and lanes of this state
will receive the hearty co operation
of the Democrat."
Admiral Cervera the Spanish com-
mander of the annihilated fleet lost
= at Santiago is a gentleman and a
. scholar rare qualities in Spaniards.
_ In his official report of the terrible
naval fight he giyes a true account
and highly applauds our generosity
and kind humanitarianism. In clos-
ing used following language: “I de-
sire to say that the enemy has con-
ducted himself in a manner worthy
F of gentlemen prohibiting the men

The crisis in the peace negotia-
. tions at Paris has been arriving ev-
ery other day for the last mouth
and it has not “arrove” yet. The
h department officials say that the
Spanish commission will be informed
H at the next meeting that the de-
bate on the sovereignty of Spain
n over the Philippines is closed and
t that they have only a limited time
t in which to accept or reject Ameri-
ca’s terms. It would simply be sui-
cidal for theSpaniardt to reject the
v terms and continue the war as they
s have nothing but wind to run on
e which is not as potent as powder.
1 Francis I. Gowan president of
the Choctaw Oklahoma A Gulf
railroad arrived in Little Rock on
’ the 14th inst. and together with
other officials of the road awarded
the contract for the construction
s of the extension from Little Rock
. to Howe in the Indian Territory a
distance of 164 miles. McCarthy A
i- Reichardt of Little Rock and
f Johnson Bros. & Faught ot St.
j Elmo 111. were the successful bid
) ders. The road is to be completed
I within twelve months and it is re-
ported the contract price for the
extension is $2000000. The con-
-3 tractors announce that construc-
i tion will be pushed from both ends
-of the line as rapidly as possible.
A Soldier’s Sensations.
' “It was the big shell and shrap-
I nel” said a soldier from Cuba “that
i made us hug the ground but it was
s the little Mauser bullets that killed
our men.” It is the same in every
day life. People shiver with panic
at the mention of small pox or yel-
low fever but it is the little disor-
■' ders of the stomach that really do
• the most killing. The best medicine
■ for the stomach is Hostetter’s Stom-
ach Bitters. It cures indigestion
and dyspepsia. It is just as good
for women as for men. For a run-
' down debilitated condition nothing
is so good or so 'sure to cure. Hos-
tetter's Stomach Bitters is an old-
■ time remedy. It has stood the test
for years and its popularity in-
creases day by day.

The Best Plaster.
A piece of flannel dampened with
Chamberlain's Pain Balm and bound
on to the affected parts is superior
to any plaster. When troubled with
a pain in the chest or side or a lame
back give it a trial. You are cer-
tain to be more than pleased with
the prompt relief which it affords.
Pain Balm is also a certain cure for
rheumatism. For sale by Smith

America Strong in Itwlf.
The Anglo-American relations
continue to be a fruitful subject of
consideration for the Paris news-
papers M. Saissy foreign editor of
the Journal gives this morning his|
opinion concerning any possible
alliance between the United States
and Great Britain. Regarding
America’s part in any understand-
ing which may be thought to exist
he takes a conservative view. “The
whole discussion” he says “is full
of buncombe. The Americans are
too clear-sighted to follow the lead
of Mr. Chamberlain. They haye
simply responded with fine words to
the British advances but when it
comes to the scratch the Ameri-
cans feel themselves strong enough
to take care of themselves and
their interests. They find reason
for believing that England would be
great assistance in an emergency
or that they would not be Eng-
land's dupes in striking an alliance
that would weigh heavily upon them
without offering any advantage.”
We wish to add that with the
present system of taxation which
dumps money into the National
Treasury the United States will
need for nothing in the way of pro-
curing war supplies and can hire
all the soldiers needed from foreign
i climes it need be to fight all of its
battles. We don’t have to form an
. alliance for protection with any
i nation and why is there so much
i talk about the matter.
Yes Give Us Credit.
While the Nation is making such
t a furor over Dewey and his Manila
i campaign it might as well be re-
membered that it was an Arkansas
boy who fired the first shot in the
; battle of Manila and he who also
t aimed and fired the shot which
y wrecked the flagship of. Montejro
. the Spanish admiral. Give the
south her dues and especially Ar-
kansas. The Arkansas boy to
- whom we refer was Lieut. Morgan
y of Camden. —Hot Springs News.
a And we wish to add that it was
t Arkansas that furnished a Bowie
? and who if our memory serves us
’ right got in the last shot on those
murderous Mexicans at the Alamo.

1 We Should Remark.
1 We have had a dry land gale with
1 us for the past twelve hours and
c how it does howl. The reporter
1 came down in it this morning with
■ his best silk umbrella the one Mr.
Lingold gave him last summer and
1 we want to remind him that noth-
• ing is left ot it but the handle. The
‘ wind got in and under that sun
shade and when it got through
with the thrashing it gave it the
’ cover resembles the Huddleston
cloth sign which also got the worst
of the storm. We now resemble
• the West Side of the city in that
we have no awning to keep off the
I pelting rain or turn the heat from
the sun's rays. We shall go before
: the council and pray them not to
rob the East Side of the city from
their only protection from wind
rain and sun—the awnings but
specify what kind of awnings should
and must be used when those now
up have rotted away or been con-
demned.
A Sure Sign of Croup.
Hoarseness in a child that is sub
ject to croup is a sure indication of
the approach of the disease. If
Chamberlain’s Cough Remedy is
given as soon as the child becomes
hoarse or even after the croupy
cough has appeared it will prevent
the attack. Many mothers who
have croupy children always keep
this remedy at hand and find that
it saves them much trouble and
worry. It can always be depended
upon and is pleasant to take. Foi

Real Widow Brown.
The aboye company will play
here tonight and it will be the first
and only real troupe of merit that
has held the boards at the Park
. Auditorium since it has been dedi-
i cated.
The troupe played at Dallas and
! the News has this to say of them :
“They were greeted by a good
sized audience and its approval of
the efforts of the talented corps
i was vociferously expressed. As
i presented last night the “Real
' Widow Baown” is doubtless one of
’ the best farces of that class copi-
q ous in all those elements that are
i productive of thoughtless laughter.
The piece as interpreted last night
■ by a strong company of comedians
0 is a sure cure for depression of
spirits and a syphony of delight to
the lover of farcical comedy.
s "The company is unusually strong
e and admirably adapted to this style
s of play. It is neither tragic ro-
e mantic nor operatic. It is simply a
farce comedy In every detail that
deserves to stand in the front rank
of theatrical concoctions designed
for laughing purposes only. The
f vocal features were very good es-
-1 pecially the singing of Beatrice
v Gambles. She possesses a remark-
-1 ably mellow voice. The singing and
' dancing specialty of Miss Blanche
' Henshaw was refined and deserving
j of much praise. The imitations of
Charles Barrington were artistic
and complete. Suffice to s?y that
1 the entire company compose a
clever entertainment worthy the
patronage of farce lovers.
