The Lee County Courier very
truly says that two things sadly
needed by the state of Arkansas are
a new constitution and a new state
house.
For the next month the minds of
the men are to be occupied by the
proceedings of congress but the
children are to forget eyen tht
Maine until after Christmas.
England is about to have another
fight with her subjects in India. It
is feared a general uprising will en
sue in which case much British
blood will likely be spilled.
Some of the Panama (unfinished)
canal owners are in Washington
and are doing their best to defeat
the passage of a Nicaragua cana
bill. It is safe to say they will not
be successful.
The politicians should cousidei
well that if the Philippines are to
put under military rule the position
of secretary of war will have to b<
removed from the list ot offices
which are passed around as political
rewards.
The decision of the supreme court
in the railroad case does not seem
to have stampeded all the trusts
According to the New York World
there are 156 now in existence with
a capital of $2000000000 and mon
trusts in the process of formation
An Oklahoma girl who advertised
for a husband got him. The total
expense of the advertisement and
wedding outfit was sll and within
a year the husband died leaving a
life insurance of $5000. And still
some people claim that it does not
pay to advertise.—Ex.
It will be a hot day in December
(mercury 100°) when the yellow
journals fail to get up something
sensational and unreliable as to
“terms of peace" the “Cubans’
demands” or “Aguinaldo on the
war path." The Cubans will acqul
esce in anything this country pro-
poses as also the Philippines.
The newspapers of the state are
giving the legislature soon to meet
some sage adyice—from their re-
spective standpoints. Os course
they do not agree by any meansand
the legislators will Hud themselves
in the same tix. Many solous who
go to the capitol with pet hobbies
will be surprised to find so many
“fools” who do not look at theques
tion through their glasses.—Ex.
The grand jury inquiring into the
Virden riots returned ten true bills
implicating in all fifty-four persons
among them Gov. Tannerof Illinois
for neglect of duty and malfeasance
in office. His bond was fixed at
SSOO. Did we eyer? Actually a
governor indicted and placed under
bond I
Those who appreciate good dental

The following dispatch from Ad-
miral Dewey dated Manila Nov.
26 was posted at the navy depart-
ment: “Isle de Luzon Isle de Cuba
and Don Juan de Austria have been
raised and docked. My anticipa-
tions as to their yalue fully realized.
Will leave shortly for Hong Kong by
their own steam. Constructor
Capps deserving of highest com-
mendation.”
An eastern editor says that a man
in New York got himself into
trouble by marrying two wives. A
western editor replied that a good
many had done the same thing by
marrying one. A northern editor
says that quite a number of his ac-
quaintances found trouble in barely
promising to marrv and not going
any further. A southern editoi
says he was bothered enough when
he was simply in company with an-
other man’s wife.
Policy of contraction and gold
mono metalism is eyen hurting the
money plutocrats of the east them-
selves. Sixteen national banks in
Boston alone representing $17000-
000 capital are in process of liqui-
dation because they find the busi-
ness unprofitable. Decline in pri-
ces and shrinkage of values have
squeezed the profits out of business
and destroyed the demand for cap-
ital. Let us hope these eastern
money plutocrats will experience a
change of heart.
The Chicago Record and Presi-
. dent John G. Shortall of the Illinois
Humane Society are strongly ad-
■ yocating the re-establishment of
the old “whipping-post” method of
“ punishment for certain classes of
law breakers as the mildest and
r best as well as most humane. We
. agree with them. At the present
term of Miller circuit court about
half of cases tried have been ne-
. groes for larceny and by haying
“whipping post" all this trouble and
■j expense could be avoided.

Texarkana & Shreveport.
The Texarkanian says that the
. Texarkana and Shreveport railroad
. is extending its rails on toward
. Shreveport in a hurry. The road
has made arrangements to get all
the rails and rolling stock needed
and will soon be blowing its whistle
f in the suburbs ot Shreveport.
There is some reticence to talk
l ' about the connections of this road
t that is about to enter Shreveport.
But there is no doubt but that it
r will become a portion of the Red
River Valley route that is now
building southward with Natchez
or some gulf point fora terminal.
The familiar face of Mr. Fouke
one. of the projectors of the line
) from Texarkana is being seen here.
That is pretty good evidence that
t the entrance of the road into this
city is near at hand.
t It will open up a new section of
country that is rich and produc-
tive to the trade of Shreveport
' and prove a valuable feeder totits
0 volume of business. These are the
n great highways to commercial and
t industrial life and activity.—

ALCOHOL'S FEARFUL WORK
Atlanta Constitution Says a Glass of
Wine Caused theCivilWar.
It is said that a single glass of
wine probably wrecked the Demo-
cratic party in 1860. The theory is
worth telling says the Atlanta Con-
stitution. After the breaking up
of the National Democratic Con-
vention at Charleston the party in
Georgia held a state convention.
The leaders of the party could not
agree. It was a critical period.
The majority report indorsed the
seceders or bolters at Charleston
while the minority report opposed"
their action. The leading champion
of the minority was Hershel V.
Johnson and his followers were
confident that his eloquence and
logic would carry the day.
It is quite likely that such would
have been the case but for an un-
fortunate mishap. Ex-Gov. John-
son began his speech before the
noon adjournment on the second
day and concluded after dinner.
Old men who remember that speech
say that it was a powerful argu-
ment and the impression gained
ground that after the noon recess
the speaker would demolish his
opponents with a few sledge-ham
mer blows.
But the over confident friends of
the miority report were doomed to
disappointmentment. Johnson felt
the strain of the morning session
so much that he was unable to eat
anything and he took a glass of
wine upon an empty stomach in
order to strengthen himself. This
was a fatal mistake. That one
glass es wine perhaps changed the
destiny of the nation!
The great orator resumed h s
speech but the wine had nauseated
him. He was hazy verbose and un-
iatellible at times. His style and
argument lacked vigor consistency
and positiveness. His friends look-
ed at one another in despair. Tht
men on the other side were exult-
ant. It was evident that the speak-
' er had damaged his own cause.
Then Howell Cobb and Henry R.
Jackson followed each other for the
1 majority report. They spoke with
an air of expectant triumph ano
1 captured the convention. The ma-
; jority report was adopted. It is un
necessary to follow the history ot
the next few weeks. The National
I D. mocracy was completely disrup
ted and put two tickets in the field.
■ Lincoln was elected and the count-
-1 ry was plunged into the civil war
' Had Johnson succeeded in inducing
s the Georgia convention to adopt
• his conservative ideas it is safe to
> say that other Southern states
would have fallen into line with oui
■ commonwealth and the National
: Democratic party would have re-
-5 mained united.
This is the story of what a little
f glass of wine did. It ruined a great
' party caused a disastrous war and
1 besided the loss of life cost the
’ South over $4000000000. Perhaps
’ this is rather speculative but there
1
are many who believed it a gener-
ation ago.

ly been overtaken with some bad
luck. He was making arrange-
ments to leave here and had all his
house hold effects crated ready tor
shipment it being his intention to
leiye forjanother home.
Early Sunday morning his house
caught fire while the family were
asleep. Mrs. Hudkins was the first
to be aroused she heard a loud
noise like something had fallen and
on going to the door that opened
to the hallway and discovered the
back part of the house on fire.
She awakened her husband and
little son and they barely had time
to escape. •
The alarm wos given and soon the
two fire companies were on the
ground throwing water on tht
house but it was too far gone ti
save it or any of the furniture.
The loss will prove a heavy one
to Mr. Hudgins though we learn
he carried insurance on the
the building and furniture.
