HE ORDERED 600000.
Mayor Hardin on Friday pave
orders to have 600009 bricks burnt
for him right away quick. The re-
porter learning this looked the
Mayor up and asked him what he
was going to do with so many brick.
The Mayor said “I have made a
proposition to the people of Texar-
kana that if they would lend me
a helping hand I would put up a
120000 opera house for the city ■
and having confidence that tie
proposition will be accepted I haj’e
ordered the brick that I may
work at the earliest moment '
Here the Mayor added you knsw
brick are staple and if I do not bu|ld
I can easily dispose of ray purchase.
The Mayor has an idea of build-
ing a three story opera house. He (
will excavate the two lots cornier
State and Clinton building a swim-
ming pool in the middle say 30 xiSO
feet; this will give a promenade Jill 1
’round of 20 feet. On the second
floor will be the opera house the
entrance and floor rising eight feet
from the ground elevation. Above
the opera house will be a large
hall which can be used for dancing
and public meetings. The Mayor
has the whole scheme figured <yit
and if he is ever able to carry-out
his project Texarkana will have a
combination house hard to beat'and
one that will be an ornament to our ■
city. It will only take fifty men |
who will contribute a hundred each
to make up the bonus that will
cause the building to spring up as
by magic. The Mayor said to the
reporter “I have assurances from
several friends that they would con-
tribute to the undertaking and I
shall hold the offer I make for a
short time and if it is not accepted
will erect another building or build-
ings on those lots I now hold for
the opera house.
Mr. Porter a countryman swore
out a warrant against Mr. Geo.
Walker and his two sons Messrs.
James and Noah Walker on yester-
day charging them with stopping
him on the public highway by ex-
hibiting a gun and clubs and abus-
ing him inviting him to get out of
his wagon and light etc. The pa-
pers were issued by ’Squire Hud-
gins. The Walker’s were represent-
ed by Joe E. Cook and Porter by
A. M. Garrison. A change of ven-
ue was taken before the case was
brought to trial and will come up
next Tuesday before Justice Win-
ham.
Yesterday the Hickham . house
was robbed of several pieces of sil-
ver Uware and susplcioned a
young man. Officer Crow served
papers on him and started to jail
while enroute the young man self-
injected cocaine in his arm and
when he reached the city jail he
tumbled over with fits. The officer
found him a physical wreck from
the use of the drag ml tumed
him loose. He pulled for a drug
store and procuring a fresh supply
of the drug jabbed his arms a
ceuple of times with the needle
syringe and waddled off as if in a
dream.
The M. K &T. Ry. had a head
end collision on the Mineola branch
a few days ago in which Mr. Bird
who was out on a drumming expe-
dition for Kline s bakery was shaken
up and thought to be hurt inter-
nally. He went to Mineral Wells to
lay up and be treated..

A few days ago we were told by
a saloon man that the Courier
editor has served notice that he
would give the saloon until Sept 1
in which to stop their prostitution
of the Sabbath day. This paper
called the officers attention to the
fact and was locked up in the court
room for his trouble. Brother
Stuart you had better look out
haw you tread on the corns of
court officers on the west side —
they are very sensitive in some
things and we have found out they
don't take any meddling with the
dram shops.

At old Boston yesterday the
county court was engaged in try-
ing a case—the State of Texas
against Jim Christopher for own-
ing and exhibiting a “slot machine.”
The defendent was found guilty and
a tine of $25 and ten days In jail was
the penalty assessed. Mr. Christo-
pher appealed the case. Other ca-
ses of a similar nature were contin-
ued.
Mr. Mayfield has coine and gone.
What he did or said to the Pee Gee
officers is a blank to us and we do
not undertake to even guess. He
will go back to Austin and tile his
report and it may be pigeon holed
for an indefinite time and Texarka-
na will be beaten out of the head-
quarters of the road. We learn that I
should the officers be removed from
here which they are to a certainty
that the state will declare the char-
ter forfeited and when the recei-
vers turn it back to the bond-hold-
ers or owners they will have to set-
tle up with the state and take out
a new charter and can then name
in said charter any place in Texas
as a general office point.
