The Loafer.
A local loafer—the imp of idle-
ness society’s scalawag on general
principles. And like the nimble
flea is everywhere—except at work.
He crawls out of bed after the man-
ner of a crawfish just in time to
find fault with his breakfast wait-
ing on the table for him. He be-
stows a cuff or a kick upon his faith-
ful wife instead of a kiss. He saun-
ters up town to ornament street
corners with his presence and whit-
tle store boxes upon which he sits
spinning yarns and squirting tobac-
co juice upon the sidewalks and at
flies that swarm around him like
gnats after a filthy cur. With a
mouth as full of nastiness as a sew-
er he damns the town and all the
decent people in it. He is the in-
dolent barnacle of the town the
leech that preys upon industry a
pestiferous lounger and an all round
nuisance endured only because it
can’t be abated. He enjoys the
distinction of being the king bee of
idleness and the drone of society.

Still in the Lead.
There is at present more coal oil
and gas used in Texarkana than
ever before. After a careful exam-
ination we find that it is caused by
the 45 pupils that are enrolled in
the International Correspondence

late at night securing a business

loss of their present position or sal-

The Vets Ride the Colgate
Colts a Bug Hunting.
i THE ROOTBRS GO WILD.
The Shreveport sls to $1 High
Rollers Left Their Money
Here.
The game of base ball played be-
tween the Shreveport nine and that
of this city on yesterday was a de-
ceiving one—deceiving more to the
“Sports” perhaps than anything
they have ran upon in a long time
and the Sbreveportians were not
only ones deceived in the game for
many of our sports dropped their
dollars betting against the “Vets."
The game at one time stood 10 to
lin favor of Shreveport and as
the club had beaten the Texarkana
boys two games before the betting
fraternity thought they had a dead
thing in betting their money on the
Colgate Colts and in order to get a
bet they offered any kind of odds—-
as high as sls to sl and there was
some one around ready to take such
bets.
The Texarkana boys caught the
Sport boys off their guard and they
filled the bases full of men and then
the fun began. The ball was rapped
repeatedly and the runners came
in home by twos and threes and it
looked as if it would never stop.
They caught up with Shreveport on
runs and then the spectators went
wild especially the small boys who
tossed their hats in the air and
yelled like Commanche Indians. The
excitement ran so high that the
diamond was fringed with the
eage/crowd to watch every play.
When Shreveport retired on its
9th inning without making a run
the game stood 14 to 14 and Tex
arkana went to the bat and soon
had two men on bases and no one
out. A good rap of the ball at this
juncture was all that was needed
and it soon came and one of the
base runners was brought over the
plate and the game was won.

NOTES.
The day proved to be an ideal one
for bail playing the clouds hiding
the sun from view.
The crowd was large and enthusi-
astic.
A game of ball is not over until it
is played out.
Captain Tony Ghio has at last
beaten Shreveport—he should now
change the name of his nine to that
of “Rough Riders."
“Hi Ki” of the Sports pitched a
good game and they should have
left him in the box.
Captain Ghio while making a
slide for 3rd base ran into 3rd base
man McDonald throwing him vio-
lently to the ground breaking the
small bone in his (McDonald's) leg.
Dr. Bright who was at the game
was called and he took the young
man to the Cosmopolitan hotel and
set the leg
The base ball team twelve in
number stopped at the Cosmo.
