FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH
Mullin, Texas
By: Lamar Griffin
PRIESTHOOD TO ONE
ANOTHER
Recently, here at First Baptist
Church of Mullin, we have been
studying together a book entitled
“The Doctrine of the Priesthood of
Believers” by Walter B. Shurden.
Brother Ricky, of course, has, the
responsibility of serving as priest
of our congregation, as we look to
him as our leader. But then we as
individuals share a responsibility
also and this is the area that I will
touch on in this writing. It’s the
glue, I suppose you could say, that
helps hold us together. At this
time I wish to reflect back on the
subject we have just discussed,
“Priesthood of Believers”, and
re-access the value of some of the
topics we have discussed, and
hopefully hi-light some of the
lessons we have learned. Faith and
works go together. Without faith
there is no vision . . . without
works there is no realization. So
where do we begin; what shall we
do? The best place I know is to
establish or re-establish if it is
already happening, the priesthood
of our family groups. No doubt our
homes are the most persistent
factor in the lives of most of us;
for it is in our homes that we get
our first and often more lasting
impression of the worth of persons,
and of the basic reality of life, and
sound principles for living, whether
it be God or whatever. Outside our
homes then, hopefully pur church
family can provide a haven where
we can love and affirm each other,
and thus meet the world with
confidence, rather than with fear
and doubt. As you trudge around
out there in the cruel world, of
today, it is mighty easy to get the
feeling the world is dominated with
people who do not have any
Christian principles or ethics, so it
is comforting to be in a group
where you are not all that
lonesome, as a Christian . . . still
we have a responsibility to God to
be a witness for Christ even and
especially in a world such as ours
today.
So then our church family, will
become and should become a
sanctuary, a place in which we
know we can return and as each
one seeks to be a priest to each
other, we can feel our souls
restored, our energies recovered
and our visions rekindled. Then
tomorrow can be longed for more
expectantly, for we will be
equipped to meet its challenges
and become all that we were
created to be.
It is part of our creation that
every human being must feel that
he or she is capable of
of God’s presence in our lives for
the sake of others. And certainly it
is not easy at all times to be
accessible and vulnerable even to
those we love the most. Yet, as
Christians somehow we ought to
be different from others in this
area.
So then if we will accept and
live out this claim upon us, of
being priests to one another, we
can help each other look forward to
tomorrow, in our chaotic world,
because we have shared our faith.
And even though we cannot know
what tomorrow holds, we know
Him who holds it and us and thus
we can meet it with confidence.
Come worship with us; it’s a
warm, friendly, wholesome, and
rewarding experience.
