Number six in 2001!
Mills Co. Sheriff’s Department
captures meth lab, suspect
Officers of the Mills County Sheriffs
Department, answering a complaint of
someone trespassing on property on County
Road 142, uncovered its sixth clandestine
methamphetamine laboratory of the year last
Friday, June 15th.
After receiving the call and a description of
the vehicle, a 1991 Nissan pickup, which had
been reported stolen from Lampasas County,
Sheriff Doug Storey and Deputy Clint
Hammonds responded to the vicinity, which
was north of Priddy.
While enroute to the scene, the officers met
a vehicle that matched the general descrip-
tion of the trespasser. They stopped the
vehicle and determined that the truck was
indeed the one that was reported stolen from
Lampasas County.
A search of the vehicle revealed a small
amount of marijuana and methamphetamine
in the cab of the truck. When a tarp was
removed that was covering the bed of the
truck, a clandestine methamphetamine
laboratory, along with over 40 grams of
manufactured methamphetamine was uncov-
ered.
After identifying the suspect as Jimmie Don
Clifton, date of birth 10/14/1962, a white male
of Austin, officers were informed by Clifton
that the vehicle also contained red phospho-
rus, a highly-explosive ingredient used in the
manufacture of methamphetamine.
Sheriffs officers contacted the Texas
Department of Public Safety Crime Labora-
tory Unit, who later arrived at the scene to
process the vehicle due to the explosive
contents.
Suspect Clifton was later found to be a
federal fugitive wanted by the United States
Marshal’s Office on a charge of conspiracy to
manufacture and distribute methamphet-
amine. The U. S. Marshal’s Office out of
Taylor County transported Clifton from Mills
County.
Sheriff Storey said if the responding officers
had been just a few minutes earlier or later,
they might not have made the connection with
the Nissan pickup.
