Repetitive Strain Injury
By Mike McMahan, R.Ph.
I have seen wild asparagus in
Barstow, explored the falls at
Grandfalls, reported on the
Rattlesnake Bomber Base at
Pyote and interviewed people in
Thorntonville, Royalty and
Wickett. I know Ward County.
It's one of my favorite places. I
especially love Monahans.
I left the Permian Basin to at-
tend graduate school in Missouri
in 1964and came back three years
later. The first place I visited when
I got back to the area was the
Monahans Sandhills State Park.
I went there with my son and we
took a buggy ride through the
dunes. It felt good to be back.
The people of Monahans are
robust and healthy, and like the
skies overhead, open and friendly.
I've recently talked with people
living in Monahans who left the
city as teenagers and worked all
their adult lives to get back to
Monahans.
The city has clean air and an
excitement that's hard to describe.

The Butterfield Ball and
Cancer Gala give residents
opportunities to dress up and
have fun for good causes.

Repetitive strain injury is caused by recurrent
overuse, resulting in microtrauma to tissues.
Local pain, weakness, inflammation, and limitec
function are common. Some of the strain injuries
seen most often are carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, shoulder
impingement syndrome, tennis elbow, and myofascial pain disorders. It
is important to eliminate aggravating factors, such as improper posture,
inadequate attention to ergonomic factors at work, and contributory
habits (e.g., jaw or hand clenching). Appropriate self-help strategies used
at home may restore flexibility and strength with a minimum of medical
intervention, but pain relief must be achieved before patients can be
. expected to follow through with rehabilitation efforts. Use of ice packs,
massage, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or topical pain-relief
agents is often helpful. Prompt, temporary pain relief can also be
achieved with injection of a local anesthetic-corticosteroid mixture.

Texas Sahara. The 90 feet dunes
* can be beautiful and tranquil, but
a howling wind can turn them
into a fierce sandstorm.
This vast area of gleaming sand,
once a barrir to pioneer travelers
and wagon trains, is now a place
for picnics and sand surfing.
Monahans has several civic
groups all working together to
seek new industries and a new
