If You Can’t Swallow - Spray It
By Mike McMahan, R.Ph.
Medicated nasal sprays may provide a safe
and effective alternative when patients can not
or do not want to use oral or injectable medi-
cations. Historically, nasal sprays have been
primarily used to treat nasal symptoms, such as allergies and
dry nose. However, various medications are now available as a
nasal jelly, spray, or drops to treat numerous illnesses and other
problems. The mucosal membrane which lines the nose can
readily absorb many drugs when properly formulated into nasal
preparations. Nasal sprays have been used to relieve pain and
provide sedation, to start or increase breast milk production,
as an aid to smoking cessation, and to treat migraines, nausea,
allergies, diabetes insipidus (a water retention and elimination
disorder), and osteoporosis. Nasal delivery of insulin and drugs
for erectile dysfunction is currently being studied. Ask our com-
pounding professionals for more information!
