hurts parks
Because flood insurance is
a condition of reimburse-
ment, the Texas Parks and
Wildlife Department will not
receive full reimbursement
from the Federal Emergency
Management Agency.
The Parks and Wildlife
Department expected FEMA
funding to repair flood-re-
lated damages brought about
by Hurricane Rita, which
struck East Texas on Sept.
24, 2005. A number of state
parks sustained serious dam-
age.
We're not tops
in volunteerism
in a national state-by-state
comparison of volunteerism,
Texas ranked 34th among its
peers with 28.3 percent of
residents putting in some
time as volunteers between
2003 and 2005.
Top ranked among states
was Utah, with 48 percent of
its adults committing per-
sonal time as community vol-
unteers.
Nationally, women volun-
teer at a rate of 32.4 percent
while men volunteered at a
rate of 25 percent. Among
women, those with children
at home volunteered most
(40 percent).

% Topical Anesthetics- 1
j Lollipops & more
Topical anesthesia is an essential need, and a form of therapy that
aptly demonstrates how compounding pharmacists can work together
with physicians and patients to provide customized medications to meet
specific needs. Commercially available (manufactured) topical anesthet-
ics are limited, and sometimes unavailable. For example, oral viscous
lidocaine is a thick liquid that is useful for treating painful lesions in the
mouth, such as radiation- or chemotherapy-induced mucositis. How-
ever, the gelatinous liquid can not be limited to contact with a particular
area, and overuse, in an attempt to control the pain, has led to serious
toxicity. When a topical anesthetic is prepared in a lollipop, the patient
can hold the anesthetic in direct contact with a oral lesion, and therefore
less medication may be required to control the pain. Topical anesthetic
sprays, creams, and gels can also be compounded to contain the most
appropriate combination of anesthetics, for use prior to laser surgery, on
wounds or skin ulcerations, or prior to dressing changes. Contact our
professional pharmacy staff to discuss how customized medications may
help to solve a specific problem.
