Mike’s Minutes...byMike Lee
Basketball will always be No. 1 in Priddy, but Curtis
Hurst has carved a nice niche for cross country
to work hard, and that hard work
Curtis Hurst had no dreams of
building a cross country tradition
when Priddy High School hired
him in 1990.
"I had no clue what might
transpire," said Hurst, freshly
graduated from Tarleton State at
the time. "I was just looking for
a job. I had interviewed at Ham-
ilton and Evant and Brady, but I
still needed something. I was just
happy to be employed."
Priddy had recently begun
cross country with some success
at the junior-high level when
Hurst arrived. In high school, a
few boys were running but not
enough to field a team.
On one hand, building a
competitive cross country team
seemed unlikely at Priddy,
where basketball has been and
will remain the community's No.
1 sport.
On the other hand, schools
across Texas were using cross
country to get a headstart on
physical conditioning for their
basketball players. There is no
football at Priddy, so in the fall,
the school's best athletes are
available to run cross country.
Finally, kids at Priddy, with their
rural and farming roots, are no
strangers to hard work.
"The community was all in
favor of cross country, but they
didn't want it to hurt basketball,"
said Hurst, a 1985 graduate of
Star High School. "Cross coun-
try is the type of sport that will
help any other sport because
/ it strengthens your lungs and
heart."
The biggest threat cross coun-
try poses to basketball is with
injuries. Hurst has been fortu-
nate since only once that he can
remember in 19 years has a cross
country injury, which usually
is a stress fracture, prevented
a Priddy athlete from playing
basketball. "There are two keys
to that," said Hurst, who's also
an assistant basketball coach,
"proper shoes and not trying to
| do too much too fast.
"The community has taken to
it (cross country) because they
like to see the kids be successful.
They see that it teaches the kids

Goldthwaite Middle School
Goldthwaite Middle School won its fifth consecutive UIL champi-
onship on Thursday by earning 1287.5 points. Meridian was a distant
second with 612.5 points, followed by Bosqueville with 499.5 points,
Valley Mills with 312.5 points, and Evant with 138. The students
did an outstanding job of representing Goldthwaite. The student
winners are listed in an article elsewhere in this week's paper. A big
thank you goes out to everyone who helped us host this event.
Semester Exams begin this week. On Wednesday, December 17,
students will have semester exams for periods l,2,6,and 7 followed
by exams for periods 4,5,2 on Thursday, December 18.
The Middle School Christmas Concert will be Thursday, Decem-
ber 18 at 6:30 PM in the High School Gym. The seventh grade and
eighth grade bands will perform.
We will have our annual volleyball tournament among our students
on Friday, December 19, followed by a noon early release for the
Christmas Holidays. School will resume on Monday, January 5.
GMS wishes everyone a safe and happy Christmas holidays!
will pay off in any sport."
If Priddy residents like seeing
their school kids be successful,
they should love Hurst's cross
country program. His boys'
teams have won two Class 1A
state championships in 1994 and
'95, finished as the state runner-
up twice in 1993 and '97, and fin-
ished third at state in 1996.
Brandon Massingill won the
individual state championship in
1997 while David Drueckham-
mer finished second at state four
consecutive years from 1991-94.
More recently, David Stephen-
son finished second at the state
meet.
More than 10 of Hurst's for-
mer runners at Priddy have run
collegiately. In his 19 seasons as
the boys' coach, Hurst has had a
state qualifier -- either a team or
an individual - every year. This
year, the boys' team finished sev-
enth at last month's state meet.
"Basketball is still concen-
trated on, but the cross country
kids are proud, too, because
they know they have a chance when possible. At regional and time in the 1500 was 4:05, which
to make it to regional or state," state in cross country, Priddy converts to 4:22 for a one-mile

The Pirates train by running
35-40 miles per week on dirt
roads around the countryside
near Priddy. Or at their running
track that was road-graded out of
a pasture near the school. Hurst
also coaches the girls' team now,
and they average 25-30 miles
per week. The boys and girls
run every day during the season,
regardless of the weather unless
there's a threat of lightning.
