WTC relative hosts
celebrity tournament
by Cyndi Trujillo
Every small town has its
share of celebrities.
Muleshoe, Texas is no excep-
tion. Their famed celebrity,
Lee Horsley, better known as
Matt Houston is hosting the
Celebrity Tennis Tournament
in Lubbock, April 27-29.
Texas Tech University Foun-
dation is sponsoring the event
to raise scholarship money
Muleshoe fans are preparing
a giant fan letter to present to
Horsley. Circulation began in
the Muleshoe State Bank and
will be distributed throughout
the entire community. A
delegation from Muleshoe will
present the letter to Horsley
when he arrives in Lubbock.
Our own Doug Horsley,
WTC maintenance worker, is
kin to Horsley. He grew up
with Horsley's grandmother in
Muleshoe.
When asked about the Lub-
bock event Horsley said he
and his family are planning to
attend.
"I haven't seen much of Lee
since he was a teenager, but
my grandchildren and I watch
him on TV," Horsley said.
Dozens of other movie and
television stars will accompany
Horsley in a dinner show April
28 at 8 p.m. in the Civic
Center exhibition hall. Local
talents will also perform.
Tournament play officially
begins Friday at 3:10 p.m.
Saturday play commences at
10 a.m. and resumes Sunday
at 9 a.m. Finals are scheduled
to start tentatively at 2:30 p.m.
Sunday.
Hollywood director Ray
Noval and Charles Bucks, an
active Tech supporter, have
made all the arrangements for
the dinner show and tourna-
ment.
"In the beginning we
guaranteed 12 celebrity players
and a month before the tour-
nament, we had more than 30
ready to come to Lubbock,"
Buck said in a recent inter-
view. "We have been
delighted with the response
we've received from the
stars." He also added the
negative responses he did
receive were due to prior work
committments.
Some of the celebrities at-
tending the tournament are
Lloyd Bridges, Cathy Lee
Crosby, Jerry Van Dyke, the
Dick Van Patten family, Lyle
Waggoner, Christopher
Holden, Robert Walden, Mar-
ty Kove, Ray Noval and the
Ray Noval Orchestra, Cindy
Gibb, Patrick Wayne, Abby
Dalton, Morgan Brittany,
Connie Stevens, Desi Arnaz,
Jr. and Grant Goodeve.
Dinner tickets are priced at
$100 and general admission
tickets are $12 each.
