McBride studies advertising agency phases
Dr. Michael H. McBride, full-time personnel and to copywriting and nrint advertising rnntPst fnr rimiar
Dr. Michael H. McBride,
former Western Texas College
journalism professor and cur-
rently a professor of jour-
nalism and coordinator of
advertising at Southwest Texas
State University in San Mar-
cos, will be Visiting Professor
this summer at a large
Southwest advertising agency.
Earlier this year, McBride
formally applied for a position
in the "Visiting Professor Pro-
gram," co-sponsored by the
American Advertising
Association and the Advertis-
ing Educational Foundation.
He was recently notified that
the joint committee met in
Washington, D.C. to approve
his nomination.
McBride will be one of few
advertising educators nation-
wide to work in a major agen-
cy, to observe all phases of
operations from media to
creative to research and
developement, to conduct in-
house workshop training ses-
sions with agency trainees and
full-time personnel and to
assist in the implementation of
possible student internship
programs for advertising ma-
jors at Southwest Texas State.
In his first year at SWT,
McBride's students have won
significant honors in all com-
petition entered. Last week in
Oklahoma City, the five-
person presentation team
representing SWT placed third
in the District 10 American
Advertising Federation Na-
tional Student Competition,
behind Texas Tech University
and the University of
Houston. They defeated teams
representing such universities
as SMU, TCU, Oklahoma,
Oklahoma State, Arkansas-
Fay etteville, Arkansas-Little
Rock, Oral Roberts and
Oklahoma Tech.
Two weeks ago, his student
who won the campus tryout
for on-site advertising contests
at the Texas Intercollegiate
Press Association in Arlington
took third places in both
copywriting
layout/design.
Earlier, at the Houston
Advertising Federation stu-
dent competition at the
Galleria, one of his students
won second in the four-state
print advertising contest for
the client, Mothers Against
Drunk Drivers (MADD), and
SWT tied the University of
Texas at Austin for fifth
overall.
His advertising students also
are entered in the Philip Mor-
ris, Inc. Advertis-
ing/Marketing competition
and the Nissan/Datsun con-
test. As SWT has joined the
Southwest Journalism Con-
gress, next year advertising
students will enter more single
ad and ad campaign
categories.
Last month, McBride was a
special guest of the Specialty
Advertising Association Inter-
national in their "Very Impor-
tant Professor" program. He
was one of eight educators in-
vited to participate in a
workshop-panel discussion
with Professor George Herpel
of Villanova University.
He has been instrumental in
assisting the journalism
department in designing cur-
ricular changes that will lead
to a new Bachelor of Jour-
nalism degree in advertising,
public relations, broadcasting,
new-editorial and magazine se-
quences. The department is
scheduled to occupy new per-
manent facilities in Old Main.
McBride teaches junior-
senior level courses in advertis-
ing principles, copy and
layout/ design, management
and research, and campaigns.
He is also a consultant to Stu-
dent Publications at SWT, is
co-adviser of the local chapter
of AAF with Dr. Mary Ann
Stutts, marketing professor
and is an advertising seminar
partner and consultant with
Dr. Richard Priesmeyer,
management professor.
Because of his community
college experience at WTC, he
has been named to a newly-
organized committee on cam-
pus, the Transfer Advisory
Council, designed to assist
community college transfer
students to the university.
Five summer camps offer
educational, fun activities
by Lynn Quiros
WTC will see a lot of action
this summer, according to
Jerry Baird, director of adult
vocational education/continu-
ing education. Five camps are
scheduled for the summer.
James Eby, director of golf
course/landscape technology,
is hosting a one-day landscap-
ing seminar June 1. A three-
hour field trip is planned.
A Food Management
Seminar, directed by Dr.
David Hayes, dean of the food
management program at
Texas Tech, is scheduled for
June 2. Persons interested can
contact Baird at ext. 240.
In conjunction with the All-
Star Cheerleading Conference,
a cheerleading camp is set
June 18-21. Approximately
100 cheerleaders are expected
to attend. Mickey Baird, stu-
dent activities director, is
coordinator.
Jimmy Ritchey, Christian
Student Center director, will
conduct a Bible camp July
8-12. Everyone is invited to at-
tend.
Approximately 125 students
are expected to take part in a
band camp August 6-19.
Many organizations choose
WTC for their summer events
because of the available space
and the facilities that are of-
fered.
