Athletes presented awards
by John Moesch
The annual Western Texas
College Athletic Awards Ban-
quet was held Monday night in
Towle Park Barn.
Dr. Don Newbury, college
president, started the
festivities by welcoming all
guests and commenting on the
success of the college's athletic
programs this year.
Phi Theta Kappa president,
Danny Hunter, gave the in-
vocation.
Master of Ceremonies for
the event was city manager
John Gayle.
The coaches introduced
their team members and the
accomplishments of each were
announced.
Rodeo coach, Bob Doty,
presented thirteen members
who lettered in rodeo this
year. These included Canita
Cass, Judy Cox, Kellie Kyle
and Sheila Fifer for the
women's team. Todd
Whatley, Van Hale, Shane
Smith, Randy Bomar, Gary
Rowe, C.J. Urbanek, Rowdy
Rasberry, Mark Mauldin and
Dale Gideon represented the
men's team.
Golf coach and athletic
director, Dave Foster, then
presented a plaque to Snyder
mayor Rod Waller, who serves
as Booster Club President, for
his hard work and support this
year.
He also recognized John
Moesch, college newspaper
reporter and sports director at
KSNY Radio and Bill Mc-
Clellan, sports editor for the
Snyder Daily News, for their
media coverage this year.
Foster singled out two
members of his squad for in-
dividual honors. These were
Clark Dennis, freshman
Golfer of the Year and Mike
Standley, sophomore golfer,
was named Player of the Year.
Dennis will compete for the
University of Arkansas next
year. Standley will be transfer-
ring to the nation's number
one golf team, the University
of Houston.
The last of Foster's presen-
tations went to Lance
McMillan, assistant pro shop
director.
Duster coach, Joe Cushing,
then introduced his ladies and
singled out sophomore Mary
Nell Clayton of Roby for her
achievements this season. She
set or tied 12 school basketball
records. Also honored was
Dallas freshman, Clara Camp-
bell. She set two school
records., Cushing recognized
and thanked the team trainer,
Renee Sharber of Sulpher Spr-
ings.
Westerner coach Barry
Davis concluded the activities
after presenting watches to all
of his players.
Plaques were presented to
the sophomore Westerners.
Co-captains, Larry Banks and
Richie Fells, received special
plaques.
Banks was also awarded for
being named Honorable Men-
tion Junior College Ail-
American in basketball. For
this he received a standing
ovation.
Sharber closed the
ceremonies with the benedic-
tion.
