Notes from the bench
1983-84 provides grand opportunities
John Moesch
What a year! I could ramble
for days about this and that or
get you up to date on what's
happening in sports, but in-
stead I am going to use this
last column of notes to thank
some people for really pro-
, viding me with an outstanding
year of sports.
Let me begin with a special
thanks to Barry Davis and his
Westerners. They gave me the
opportunity to attend a na-
tional basketball tournament
which I will never forget. You
made my job as a broadcaster
a great deal easier with so
many exciting games to cover.
Usually, one or two heart-
stoppers in a season will keep
any announcer happy. You
guys gave me several; the
regional finals (the best game I
announced all year), the games
at nationals and all those one-
point and overtime contests
during the season. You
couldn't ask for more excite-
ment.
I wish Barry all the luck in
the world next year. He truly
has put basketball back in the
limelight at WTC. Also I hope
those players advancing to
four-year schools will find a
starting role on those squads.
Joe Cushing, thank you and
your ladies' team. A lot of
character and poise was
displayed during the loss to
McClellan in the regionals.
Tied for my favorite game
this year is the women's

It is recruiting time again
and basketball coaches Barry
Davis and Joe Cushing are
wasting no time.
Cushing has signed two high
school standouts already.
Lenetta Richardson from Spur
and Rhonda Chisum from
Lubbock Cooper.
Chisum, a 5-6 guard, was
All-South Plains player of the
year as a junior. She was also
all-district, all-region and
third team all-state her junior
year.
"I feel like Rhonda can be
an exceptional player for us,"
Cushing said. "I think the on-
ly reason she went junior col-
lege instead of a four-year
school was because she broke
her ankle in the seventh game
this year and missed out on all
of the honors she would have
had. Her ankle has

rehabilitated."
"Lenetta is a good outside
shooter and has good
quickness. She'll be a good
power-forward for us,"
Cushing remarked.
Davis has also added a few
more recruits to his roster for
next year.
6-8 forward-center James
Kimmans, a high school stan-
dout at Oak Park and River
Forest, has signed for the
84-85 year.
Kimmans averaged 15
points a game and was voted
honorable mention three con-
secutive years. Also in 1980 he
made all-state and received
honors at the five star basket-
ball camp.
Next is 6-5 guard-forward
James Dawn, a transfer from
Texas Tech. He was

Odessa! Awesome. The
Dusters of 1984 were one of
the hardest working squads at
WTC.
I know that those who
transfer will enjoy a great deal
of playing time because the
talent is there, no doubt about
it.
Noticing the Snyder Daily
News the last couple of weeks,
Cushing has already begun
molding next year's squad
which I have a feeling will be
one of the best this school has
seen. I will be glad to put my
money where my mouth is on
that statement.
Congratulations are in order
to those who have already
signed with other schools.
This list includes Larry
Banks to North Texas State
University, Fred Johnson to
West Texas State University,
Melroy Butler to St. Louis
University and Mary Nell
Clayton to Abilene Christian
University.
Thank you Dusters and
Westerners for making 1984 a
memorable year for myself
and all Snyder basketball fans.

year twice.
Transferring from Southern
University is 6-2 guard
Roderick "Rocky" Batiste. At
McKinley High School he
averaged 16 points, six re-
bounds and four assists a
game.
Ed Teal, brother of former
Duster stars Shari and Vicki
Teal, will also join the squad.
During his senior year at Aber-
nathy High School he was
dubbed most valuable player
of the district, all-regional, all
south plains, all-state and
player of the year. Teal
averaged 22.7 points, 17.6 re-
bounds and 4.2 blocked shots.
He shot 60 percent from the
field and 69 percent from the
free throw line.
