Cougars close best
ever baseballyear
By KEITH WHITMIRE
Leader sports writer
With one game left on Tuesday, the Colony baseball team has assured
itself of no worse than a .500 record.
Going into 'Tuesday’s meeting with Denison, the Cougars held a record of
13-12, 3-6 in district 9-4A.
Quite an accomplishment, considering the Cougars’ past seasons.
‘It s a 10-game improvement in the win column, and the kids deserve all
the credit,” said coach Robert Swtizer. “'They’ve worked real hard this
year.”
A win over the Yellow Jackets would bring a fitting end to 'The Colony’s
most successful season, and set a tone for next year.
“We’ve improved over the whole season, but we’ve still got lots of things
to work on,” said Switzer. “We’ve got quite a few guys coming back.”
Returning next year will be B J. Ehrman, Greg Hilst,JasonJanacek, Clark
Ramsey, Bobby 'Thompson, Johnny Rodriguez, Bobby Comstock and Shane
Young. All have played key roles this season.
The Cougars will lose the bats of players like Matt Gayle and Tae Bum
Kim, and the consistent arm of pitcher Chad Williamson.
“The main thing is we’ve got to find a pitcher that’s as reliable as Chad is,”
Switzer said.
, Pitchers with such potential include Young and Comstock, giving the
Cougars several tested arms for next season.
Before 'The Colony can think about next season, the Cougars had one
more game to go on Tuesday. Denison beat the Cougars in the first half of
district 11-3, but since then The Colony has played .500 baseball in district.
“I think we can beat them,” said Switzer. “We’ve come back the second
round and everyone that has beaten us, we’ve beaten them or played them
much better.”
The Cougars beat Allen last Tuesday 4-2. Young started the game and left
with a 2-1 lead. Williamson closed and got the save.
Williamson started against Rockwall on Friday and went the distance in an
8-4 loss. Only three of Rockwall’s runs were earned.
The Yellowjackets scored seven runs in a disastrous third inning.
“We were ahead 2-0, then we made a mental error and a physical error,”
said Switzer. “That opened the door for them. You can’t give them too many
or they’ll take advantage.”

Road stops at region
for TCHS tracksters
By KEITH WHITMIRE

Considering they were com-
peting in probably the toughest
regional in the state, just getting
to the Region II track meet was
an accomplishment in itself for
The Colony track team.
The Colony sent nine competi-
tors to the Class 4A Region II
meet at Fouts Field in Denton.
The Cougars had just one par-
ticipant make the finals on Satur-
day, but overall boy’s coach
Richard Brunner considered the
day a success.
“In a tougher district we got
more kids into regionals than last
year,” said Brunner. “They got
there, they earned it. It was a real
good, positive experience.”
Daynon Federick made the fin-
als in the 800 meter run and
finished seventh.
The only Lady Cougar compet-
ing, Gail Adger, did not qualify for
the finals in the 100 meter hurdles
and just missed the finals in the
discus, finishing ninth with a
throw of 94-8.
“She was a foot and a half from
making the finals, which isn’t too
shabby considering she just pick-

ed it up in the middle of the sea-
son," said girls’ coach Peggy
Christian.
“I think she has a lot of poten-
tial in the discus. She just has so
much ability and coordination,
which is so important in the
discus.”
Regional qualifiers from The
Colony included Steve Clark, Ro-
ger Rudell, Jason Conners,
Robert Lassiter, Eric Childs,
Thomas Denson Bruce Kearney.
Adger, Clark, Rudell, Denson,
Kearney and Lassiter all return
next year for another shot at qual-
ifying for state.
