Geography Bee

Aleyna Vaughn, a fourth-grade
student at B.B. Owen Elementary
School, won the school-level com-
petition of the National Geography
Bee on Jan. 14 and a chance at a
$25,000 college scholarship.
Chris Devlin was the runner-up in
the school-level competition. Final-
ists were Bryan Gonzales, Nina
Ting, Shannon Grimes, Isaac Pal-
mer, Brandon Phyfer, Holly Dillard,
Kari Perkins, Crystal Hoang, Rachel 1
Bennett and Jennifer Aleman.

fifth annual National Geography
Bee, which is sponsored by National
Geographic World, the Society’s
magazine for children and Amtrak.
The kick-off for this year’s bee
was the week of Jan. 4 with
thousands of schools around the Un-
ited States, the District of Columbia,
and five U.S. territories participat-
ing. The school winners, including
Aleyna Vaughn, will now take a writ-
ten test; up to 100 of the top scorers
in each state and territory will be
eligible to compete in their state Bee
April 2.
The National Geographic Society
with its co-sponsors will provide an
all-expense paid trip to Washington,
D.C. for state champions and their
teacher escorts to participate in the
National Geography Bee national
championship on May 25-26. The
first-place national winner will re-
ceive a $25,000 college scholarship;
the second-place winner, a $15,000
scholarship; and the third-place win-
ner, a $10,000 scholarship.

Homeowner Landscape Manage-
ment will provide you with many tips
for improving the looks of your
yard’s landscape. This course will
include vegetable gardening, land-
scape designs, varieties of trees,
shrubs, vines and groundcovers,
and selection and maintenance of
houseplants. It meets from 7-9
p.m., Wednesdays from Feb. 17 to
April 14.
For the environmentally con-
scious homeowner who wants to
safely care for his/her lawn, Chemic-
al-Free Landscaping is a must. This
course, which meets 7-9 p.m. Mon-
days and Wednesdays, from Feb. 22
to March 10, will address maintain-
ing lawns and gardens.

‘Texas Scapes’
exhibit in display
The landscapes of urban and rural
Texas have been captured in an ex-
hibit titled “Texas Scapes” that fea-
tures the photography of Byrd Wil-
liams, coordinator of photography at
Collin County Community College,
and Charles DeBus, a Dallas photo-
grapher.
The exhibit features both the big
cities of North Texas and several
rural areas of the state as seen
through the eyes and photography of
Williams and DeBus. Their work is
on display at Photographic Archives
Lab & Gallery in Dallas, 5117 West
Lovers Lane. Admission to the ex-
hibit is free, and the gallery is open
from 10 am. to 5 p.m. Tuesday
through Saturday.
