Candidates for 73rd District to meet with retired teachers
Both the Democratic and the
Republican candidates for the
District 73 seat in the state
legislature will speak to the
Kendall County Retired Teach-
ers Association Thursday, Sept.
11, in the Family Life Build-
ing at First Baptist Church,
Boerne.
Republican Doug Miller and
Democrat Daniel Boone will
participate in a forum at the
KCRTA’s annual luncheon
which begins at 11 a.m. with a
barbecue meal.
Because retired teachers’ pen-
sions and health insurance are
set by the legislature, members
of the KCRTA are anxious to
hear the opinions of the pro-
spective legislators concerning
these issues, according to a
member.
“Texas Retired Teachers
Association, the statewide
organization, is the only organi-
zation which represents retired
teachers in Austin. TRTA has
been influential in containing
the cost of health insurance
premiums, and is solely respon-
sible for the 13th check that
retirees received this year, but
members want to impress on
the legislators the need for
cost-of-living adjustment.
“Retirees last received
a
a
COLA in 2001, when the Twin
Towers were still standing in
New York, Enron was a good
blue chip investment and gaso-
line was just a little over $1 a
gallon,” the spokesman said.
Anyone who is interested
in hearing the candidates is
welcome to attend, especially
anyone who receives an annu-
ity from the Teacher Retirement
System, whether a TRTA mem-
ber or not.
Reservations must be made
by Sept. 3. Cost is $13.62 and
may be sent to Anita Cormack,
KCRTA Treasurer, 100 Whip-
poorwill Court, Boerne, TX
78006.
Couples who complete mar-
riage education courses can
save most of the fee for obtain-
ing a marriage license and have
the waiting period waived.
A new state law, which takes
effect Sept. 1, encourages cou-
ples to attend free marriage
education classes before taking
the plunge. Couples who com-
plete the skills-based course
will pay less for their marriage
license.
House Bill 2685 increases the
marriage license fee to $60.
However, the fee will be waived
for couples who complete an
eight-hour premarital class, and
those couples can forgo the
72-hour waiting period to get
married.
Counties may continue to
charge local fees for a marriage
license - $6 in Kendall County.
For couples that do not bring
in a certificate issued by an
approved class provider, the fee
is $66.
The certificate is good for one
year and serves as proof that the
couple is eligible for the dis-
counted marriage license fee.
The state’s initiative, called
“Twogether in Texas,” promotes
free marriage education classes
that provide eight hours of train-
ing on communication skills,
conflict resolution and other
elements of a healthy marriage.
To find classes in the area,
call 2-1-1 or go to www.family-
service.org
Starting Sept. 1, couples who
complete a class will receive a
certificate that they can take to
their county clerk’s office when
they apply for their marriage
license.
