WHILE THE DOUBLE DOSE is in sympathy with the
general aims and programs of the junior baseball or-
ganizations around the country, there is one particular
feature that is deplorable.
We refer to the all-star teams that represent the vari-
ous Little, Pony, Colt and other leagues in the playoffs.

As seriously as the adults take
their Little League, Pony. Colt,
etc. the regular season offers
enough opportunities for squab-
bles without deliberately asking
for trouble by selecting an all-
star team.
One Little League president in
Abilene told us that he had to
talk to a Little League father for
over an hour after bis boy had
been omitted from the all-star
team.
In another league, a Reporter-
News reporter sat in the press
box during the all-star playoffs
last week and heard the official
scorer second guess the all-star
manager on the use of his players
and bemoan the fact that some
of the players did not even belong
on the team.

Burleson Asks New Capital
Stadium Named for Baugh
By LESLIE CARPENTER

Capital Bureau
WASHINGTON — A
proposal that Washing-
ton’s new $22 million
50,000 . seat municipal
stadium be named for
one of Texas' greatest ath-
letes, Sammy Baugh, was
made Tuesday by Rep.
Omar Burleson of Anson.
The new stadium,
which will be “home"
for Washington’s two
professional teams, the
Redskins of football and
the Senators of baseball,
is scheduled to open Oct.
1.
Baugh, Texas Christian
University All-American
in the early 1930s, played
quarterback for Washing-
tons’ Redskins for 16
years, establishing pass-
ing records in pro foot-
ball which have never
been equalled. His career
with the Redskins ran
from 1937 through 1953.
Burleson acted on be-
half of Baugh after Sen.
Frank Church (D-Idaho)
suggested that the stadi-
um be named for the
local professional base-
ball team’s all-time great,
Walter Johnson Al-
though born in Kansas,
Johnson was discovered ,
as a pitcher in Church’s
home state of Idaho.
Burleson Tuesday
wrote James Francis Reil- 1
ly, chairman of the Dis-
trict of Columbia Armory
Board, governing body of
the new stadium.
“The name of Sammy
Baugh," Burleson wrote,
“is familiar to everyone
interested in athletics
and particularly football
from coast to coast. No
explanation of the sta-
dium's name would be
required if it’s called the
“Sammy Baugh Stadi-
um.”
