Widow’s Heart
Transplant for
Haskell Karp
HOUSTON-The heart of a
40-yaer-old Massachusetts widow
is being transplanted into the
chest of 47-year-old Haskell Karp
at St. Luke’s Hospital at Hous-
ton today.
Karp received an artificial
fabric and plastic heart Friday
but doctors said it was only a
temporary measure until a hum-
an donor could be found.
The Lawrence General Hospi-
tal in Massachusetts has identi-
fied the woman as Barbara
Ewan. A spokesman at St. Luke’s
said she died of an irreversable
brain injury.
The woman was picked up at
Lowell by a jet plane , flown
from Houston. The jet, however
developed hydraulic trouble, and
a second jet flew her from
Shreveport, Louisiana to Hous-
ton. She arrived in Houston at
4:30 a.m. and died at 6:46 a.m.
The transplant operation started
at 7 a.m.

Smith Tax Plan
Fares Quite Well
In Initial Test
By VERN SANFORD
Texas Press Assn.
AUSTIN.—Governor Preston
Smith's first-state tax program
fared unexpectedly well in its
initial legislative test.
Anguished cries were raised at
a House revenue and tax com-
mittee hearing by beer, cigaret-
te, coin-operated laundry and
cable TV interests at sections of
a $175,000,000 revenue bill di-
rectly affecting them.
Of the four, however, the coin
laundries appeared to make the
most impression on the commit-
tee.
Surprisingly, not a witness ap-
peared against Smith's proposal,
contained in a separate bill, to
place a $10 state sur-tax on mov-
ing traffic violations. He esti-
mated that would raise $38.5
million.
Also, it was a surprise that
regular laundry, cleaning, dye-
ing, parking, repair and ma-
chinery rental concerns remain-
ed silent. This since they too,
would go under the 3 per cent
