Item text: "Charles H. Stasny RM3/c
Cmdr. Group 3, Fifth Amphibious Forces

May 16, 1944,

Dear Mother + Dad,

Well, after being on the island for nine months I have my sea-legs again. I really hated to leave the place. We had just fixed everything up nice and were living in comfort. I really appreciate the weather on the island now. It might have been a little hot during the middle of the day and at least we could sleep comfortable. During the daytime the ship absorbs the heat and lets it out at night. By morning it may have cooled off a bit and then it gets hot all over again.
I am sending back the money you sent plus a little more. I sure wish that I could have made use of it, but thats the way the navy goes. One day they pat you on the back and the next day the turn around and kick you. There were fourteen of us transfered from the [illegible(outfit?)] to this staff. Four of us have enough time out here and when things slow down a bit we may be able to pull some strings and get home. Of the four I have the least time. One of them already has two years out here and is a survivor and the other two will have two years the first of July.
Will you have the Eagle change my address and also have them change my rate on their address. They still have me Sea2/c. It will help the mail clerk.
The picture is one that was taken Easter Sunday. They had the mess-hall all fixed up for the services that day. They have a Protestant Chaplain on the ship so I don't know how often I'll get to go to mass now.
How does the bank account stand now after this money has been returned? I'll be able to keep it straight myself after this. I forgot what the last statement was dated.
About all I know to write about now. I have others to write too.
Love,
Chas

Charles H. Stasny RM3/c"
