EMISSIONS TESTING PROGRAM
Equal Opportunity Employer
Continued from Page 1
Carolyn Hunt at Mitchell Jobe Staffing said most employers,
though, want more from word processors than just word pro-
cessing.
Employers want more people who can not only do word
processing, but secretarial work as well," said Hunt.
Hunt said word processors usually just input data, but now
the trend seems to be more toward doing a number of differ-
ent tasks.
That is particularly true in the legal community," said Hunt,
whose agency also does temporary placement for legal
offices. They need employees to do word processing, answer
the phone, make arrangements and some filing.
It s good to develop several types of skills so that you can
be more marketable."
There are some positions that involve just word processing,
but most want people to do both word processing and admin-
istrative work," said Winterringer. "Now secretarial work is more
administrative. So many businesses are downsizing that we are
looking for those who are more well-rounded."
Hunt also said it's good to go ahead and get the experience
you need with many different types of word processing soft-
ware.
Many times the language doesn't differ much from another,
but it s still good to know many packages of software," she
said.
Typing accuracy and typing speed are also an important
part of a word processor's repertoire.
A person needs to be more accurate than fast," said
Murray. "Accuracy is important to make your job easier."
"Speed and accuracy plays a big part," said Hunt. "We
have very sophisticated tests to decide what that person's
level is. It's all computerized and graded by computers."
Hunt said for a legal word processor or secretary the speed
requirement is usually in the 80 words per minute range. But she
said most business corporations will take someone who can
type 55 to 60 words per minute.
Winterringer added that typing speed has diminished in
importance over the past five years. A lot of that has to do with
the fact so many programs have spell check and other fea-
tures that check grammar and punctuation.
According to Murray, the pay for temporary word processors
can range anywhere from $8 to $15 per hour. Hunt said usually
the legal community pays higher than the corporate communi-
ty. Winterringer said she has seen the pay increase as people in
the word processing line of work have been asked to have
more responsibility.
