GOOD READING.
By a Level-Headed Editor in the
Globe-Democrat.
There are at least two men in
favor of Senator Cullom for Presi-
dent the other one of whom is ex-
Senator Farwell.
Trade is dull in Wall street hut
as the rest of the country is flour-
ishing the predicted panic can
readily be kept at bay.
The lowa Republicans are now
adding 5000 to the general estimate
of their majority because of the
recent speeches of Mr. Mills in that
State.
The Republicans have concluded
not to make any fight in Virginia
this year; therefore the rate of mor-
tality among the colored voters will
not be as large as usual.
The late James Russell Lowell
wrote so many wise and good things
that the world can well afford to
forget that he once spoke of Grover
Cleveland as “the greatest living
American.”
The unanimity and cheerfulness
with which the people repudiated
the so-called People’s party shows
that common sense is more widely
diffused than many persons have
imagined.
There is no risk in predicting
that Campbell will be the Democ-
ratic candidate for President next
year if he carries Ohio this year
because the latter event is not at all
likely to happen.
The best time to sell wheat is
when a fair price is being offered
for it; and the farmer who neglects
to sell under such circumstances is
far more apt to lose than to gain by
the delay.
The Georgia Alliance will have
less time to denounce the financial
policy of the Republican party
while it is engaged in the work
of trying to recover the $20000
stolen from it by one of its officials.
The fact should be kept in mind
that it is not this year but next
year that Mr. Blaine’s friends pro-
pose to run him for the Presidency
and he can do a great deal of get
ting well in the meantime.
The New York Country Demo-
cracy does not like Flowers who is
slated for the Governorship. All
that the County Democracy is here
for is to lie sat upon by the dormi-
nant element of the party.
If any of the holders of the
per cent bonds do not care to have
them continued at 2 per cent then
all they need to do is to present
them for redemption and get their
money. The government is prepar-
ed to meet all demands of that
kind.
McKinley will wait until 1896 to
go to IZO White House if Blaine
consents to go in 1892. The ex-
perience in the Governorship which
he would gain between now and
then would help him in the higher
post.
Pattison is being seriously dis-
cussed again as a Presidential pos-
sibility for 1892 but it must be
conceded that his chances in this
respect have shrunk since his old
ally Quay left the Republican Nat-
ional Commitee.
The most popular thing that a
Republican politition can do nowa-
days is to .say that he has no pref-
erence to express as to the next
candidate for the presidency except
that Blaine should have the refusal
of the nomination.
A good many battles between
sound and unsound money have
been fought on Ohio soil and in all
cases the sound ultimately trium-
phed. There is an overwhelming
rebuke in store for the free silver
men in the Buckeye State this year.
