RAILROAD NOTES
Last night at about 7:30 o’clock the
office at the I. &G N. round house was
seen burning by a passer-by who entered
and gave the alarm to two wipers who
were at work 'near by. Tbe two men
rushed to the spot and tore away the
burning wood. The file originated in a
stack of waste piled on a bench and from
this it caught tne Hames in which were
placed reports of engine supplies and
burned the reports up. The pine boards
of the office were just catching when the
Are was discovered. The damage done
was very slight and for once the fire de-
partment was not called out.
Some one left the throttle of engine No.
28. on the I. & G. N. open yesterday and
when a fire was put in her she got hot
and moved out of the round house and
started for the turn-table pit and would
have gone in if it had not been for a young
man named Klockenkemper who was
painting the front end. He jumped off
and running tc the table threw it around
so as to catch the engine just in time to
save her from going into the pit. The
front end went over the table and the
trucks fell off but bad it not been for the
Youngman’s presence of mind she might
have been in the pit still but as it was
only a little time was lost as engine
No. 101 went out about twenty minutes
behind time.
The I. & G. N. bridge across the Frio
river which is being rebuilt is fast near-
ing completion in spite of tbe difficulty in
driving the piling. The ground is so hard
at this place that a large hose Is stretched
across the bridge and when a pile is being
driven a stream of water is kept running
into the hole constantly so as to soften
the earth and prevent breaking the pile
off. This tressel is the longest on the
south end of the road.
Mr. R. M. Carter traveling passenger
agent for the Cotton Belt route is in the
city.
Mr. J. J. Ryan master mechanic of the
S. P. has returned from Houston.
There will be another Raymond and
Whitcomb excursion party for California
and Mexico in this city tomorrow morn-
ing.
