DALLAS LETTER
Spicy Local Gossip From Our Own
Correspondent.
! To the Daily Light.
Dallas Tex. Oct. 9 1894.
The application of County Treas-
urer W. N. Coe for a writ of habeas
corpus came up for hearing before
Judge Hurt yesterday. Both sides
announced ready.
Mr. Coe who had been confined
to his home with acute rheuma-
tism was on hand weak and hard-
ly able to move. He was complete-
ly enveloped in along ulster which
covered him from head to foot. He
was not there without his friends.
They clustered and gathered
round proving their steadfastness
and loyalty. During the trial
Mr. Smith said Mr. Coe’s
book was kept in the
only way it could be
kept and that all the entries were
properly made. Mr. Coe it seems
kept it no secret that the money of
the court had been deposited in the
Ninth National bank. Many testi-
fied that the treasurer had told
them of the money being tied up.
After hearing many pros and cons
Judge Hurt said “I can not find a
p article of testimony even tending
Ito indicate fraud assuming even
that the entry was false when as a
matter of fact it was correct.
Though under the statute 1 can-
not discharge the applicant 1 will
hold him on his own recognizance
in the sum of $2OO. As soon as the
trial was over friends gathered
around Mr. Coe and congratulated
him. Judge Bower presented ap-
plication for a writ of habeas cor-
pus in the cases of County Com-
missioners Orr Fisher and Mc-
Adams. Judge Hurt entered an
order taking their recognizance in
the sum of $5O each.
News is received that Mr. Harry
Greenwall has purchased the Sa-
vannah theatre building at a cost
of $50000. Mr. Greenwall has pur-
chased the elegant new Lyceum in
Atlanta.
The special committee appointed
to meet and escort Hon. J. B.
Schmitz to the hotel is composed
of Capt. J. M. Steere D. A. Robin-
son Cols. H. J. Houston and S. H.
Brewer all prominent Republicans.
Arrangements have been made to
have music; ushers were appointed
to see to the seating of ladies. A
resolution was adopted by the
league asking the people to hear
Mr. Schmitz for his cause.
The people of Dallas are not reg-
istering as if they expected to take
an active part in political issues.
Up to the time of closing the office
yesteruay Col. Hynson city regis-
trar says only 1160 voters had reg-
stered.
A 17-year-old white boy named
Robert Lee was before United
States Commissioner Lednum yes-
terday on a charge of stealing a
horse iu the Indian Territory. His
hearing was set for the 17th and
bond fixed at $400: failing to fur-
nish this he was committed to jail.
The decomposing remains of a
white infant was found by a color-
ed boy near the Caruth farm.
Jus-tic e Skelton viewed the re-
mains but could get no clew to the
parents of the infant. Some per-
sons think it was taken in a buggy
from the city and placed in this
out of the way spot.
The nickle in the slot man who
died in his bed alone at the St.
George hotel after being at Un-
dertaker Smith’s thirty-five days
has been identified.
Mr’Smith embalmed and held
the remains on a cooling board
awaiting orders. Last Thursday a
letter was received from the dead
man’s brother at Fowler Indiana
stating the name of deceased was
Harry Huffman that the family
would like to have the remains
sent to Fowler but were unable to
bear the expense and instructed
Mr.Smithto inter them here as
best he could. Mr. Smith is not
disposed to part with the corpse.
Sunday the Central Christian

sary of the pastorat of Rev. M. M.

ceeded Mr. Loof a very popular
man while the members worship-
ed in the old Commerce street
Christian church. The church
