The Light was called up by telephone

had been robbed of a purse containing
$2O in money and asked us to call the
police but as the wind blew through
the mesquite or possibly a bird sat
upon the wire the message was ab-
ruptly broken off. and nothing could
be 'heard the wires sounding like a
collision or the West End motor car
jumping the track In high placesand
with Joe Garcia putting on that new
patent squeaking brake.
Deafness Cannot be Cured
ay local applications as they cannot retch ths
diseased portion of the ear. There is only ons
■ way to cure Deafness and that is by constitu-
tional remedies. Deafness is caused by an in-
flamed condition of the mucous lining of the
Eustachian Tube. When this tube getslinflamed
you have a rumbling sound or imperfect hear-
ing and when it is entirely closed Deafness is
the result and unless the inflammation can be
taken out and this tube restored to its normal
condition hearing will be destroyed forever;
nine cases out of ten are caused by catarrh
which is nothing but an inflamed condition of
toe mucous surfaces.
We will give Ons Hundred Dollars for any
case of Deafness (caused by catarrh) that can-
not be cured by Hall’s Catarrh Cure. Send for

OPERATIONS COMMENCED.
The Investment of Santiago Has Not
Been Delayed.
Washington June 7. —At least 16000
American troops are afloat and the
moral certainty eixsts that offensive
operations have commenced in Santia-
go province.
The rest the War and Navy depart-
ments enjoyed today is unquestionably
the result of known ‘ activity among
the-transports and the fleets of Schley
and Sampson.
With a coast clear ever since the of-
ficial announcement of Cervara’s bot-
tling in Santiago it was possible to
appoint a rendezvous for the trans-
ports at the eastern end of Cuba. This
opportunity for active operations was
utilized and coAfirmation seems to be
found in the report of fighting yester-
day and again this morning at Santia-
go. These reports vague and unof-
ficial allege that Sampson immediate-
ly after the blockading of the Santiago
channel moved east for the work of
landing troops from the transports.
It can be readily seen that with the
major part of both Schley’s and Samp-
son's squadrons released from blockad-
ing duty before Santiago. It was pos-
sible to make a landing at two or more
points on the coast.
The department's confidential Infor-
mation is that there are about 10000
fairly well-disciplined Spanish troops
in the province of Santiago de Cuba.
A landing at one point in the face of
such a foe would be extremely hazard-
ous. A much more sensible course
would be the division of the American
troops nlto at least two forces and
sending them ashore at different
points.

BLANCO BUSY NOW.
He Is Preparing the Whole Coast For
Defense.
Key West June 7. —Blanco is a busy
man these days. He is not losing a
minute in his preparations for the in-
vasion he knows is inevitable. A cruise
along the north coast of Cuba dis-
closes the work that is being done by
the Spaniards to resist the march of
the dreaded Yankee army.
At every station of the blockade
from Mariel to Cardenas on the east
an eagle eye is being kept on the shore
line by our warships. No doubtful
craft is permitted to approach the
blockaded island. Every effort to do
so meets with a good solid notice to
quit or go to the bottom.
Blanco Is equally as watchful. He
does not intend to be taken unawares
by a fleet of transports with an army
aboard if his sentinels do their duty.
Every available landing point is under
strong guard. On ithe side 'hills be-
tween Morro and Cabanas there are
new batteries that were not there a
fortnight ago. The same condition is
apparent to the west of the beleaguer-
ed city and in fact it Is quite evident
that the Spaniards have greatly
strengthened the earthworks on every
approach to Havana.
The work of the gunboat Wilming-
ton at Cardenas three weeks ago is no
longer apparent. The fortifications
have been entirely restored and are
better than before. New land batter-
ies have been planted. and it is now
believed that the garrison holds more
than 15000 Spanish soldiers.
