A Close Call.
New York July 29—Whitelaw Reid
narrowly escaped injury in a runaway
while driving from his home to catch
a train to New York at White Plains.
Mr. Reid held the reins and behind him
sat a coachman. While leaving the
stable Mr. Reid attempted to replace
the whip in its socket and in doing so
Inadvertently loosened his hold on the
reins. Feeling themselves free the
spirited team turned sharply toward
the stable. The buckboard was turn-
ed over and smashed and the horses
becoming detached dashed away to
their stalls.
Mr. Reid and the coachman had no
opportunity to Jump and were pinned
beneath the rig. The coachman's leg
was broken and Mr. Reid was cut and
bruised about the body face and head.
After having his injuries attended to
Mr. Reid caught a later train tor New
York. The coachman was taken home.

HOW TO LOOK GOOD.
Good looks are really more than skin
deep depending entirely on a healthy
condition of all the vital organs. If
the liver is inactive ycu have a bilious
look if your stomach is disordered you
have a dyspeptic look; if your kidneys
are affected you have a pinched look
secure good health and you will surely
have good looks. ‘‘Electric Bitters" is
a gool Alterative and Tonic. Acts di-
rectly on the stomach liver and kid-
neys. purifies the blood cures pimples
blotches and bolls and gives a good
complexion . Every bottle guaranteed.

EXHONERATED IN ALL CASES.
The outcome of the trial of Allie
Martin charged with assaulting James
Elliott was a prompt dismissal of the
case by Justice Phil Shook yesterday
afternoon the judge expressing him-
self as not desiring to try a case which
had already been decided in another
court.
Recorder Dan Lewis who had enter-
ed the fine of 35 yesterday morning
had already requested Mayor Cal-
laghan to remit same and was backed
up in his request by City Marshal
Shardein and Attorney Hertzberg.
Accordingly it was promptly remitted
by Mayor Callaghan who stated in re-
mitting it that “you did right In de-
fending the ladies and I'll certainly
remit it.”
Thus it is seen that San Antonio’s
gallant officails will not inflict pun-
ishment unjustly on a person defend-
ing ladles from slander. They have
always been noted for this however
and this occurrence is only one of the
many of frequent occurrence.
As a result of the fight three of the
boarders Bert Castanie Roe-
mer Looney and Clarence Martin
hunted new lodging apartments last
evening

Soldiers Salute Old Glory As She Is
Unfurled by the Fire Men.
Just as the soldiers' special was pull-
ing out of the Sunset depot for El
Paso yesterday afternoon the flag-
raising of the Sunset Hose company
took place at their hall on Grand ave-
nue. As the soldiers saw the bundle
at the top of the flag staff open and
Old Glory unfurl they crowded on the
platforms of the car and at the win-
dows. and gave three lusty cheers as
the train was speeding westward.
Captain Bundick of the hose com-
pany. hoisted the banner and sur-
rounded by his gallant laddies gave a
hearty response which added to the
effect of a thrilling patriotic event.
A man in Virginia rode forty miles
to Fairfax Station for the express pur-
pose of getting Chamberlain's Cough
Remedy and took home with him a doz-
en bottles of the medicine. The drug-
gist who relates the incident adds:
"Your remedy seems to be a great fav-
orite wherever known.” Its effects are
indeed wonderful in all lung and throat
troubles. Procure a bottle at any drug
store.
ADJT. GEN. CORBIN WORN OUT.
New York July 29.—A special dis-
patch to the Tribune from Washing-
ton says: Much concern is manifes-
ted regarding the health of Adjt. Gen.
Corbin who after steadily sticking to
his desk all day and half the gight for
over three months keeping up the im-
portant work thrown upon his depart-
ment since the war preparations be-
gan. was finally compelled to leave
his office at noon and go home to bed.
While he declares he will be at his
post right away the president and
Secretary Alger will probably compel
him to take a short rest or tempor-
arily at least pay less attention to the
exacting details of his office.
