LINCOLN SAVED.
Austin Gollaher Tflls How He
Saved Him From Drowning.
McClure’s Magazine.
However poor the Lincoln home
may have been it effected the new
child but little. He was robust
and life is full of Interest to the
child happy enough to be born in
this country. Ho had several
companions. There was his sister
Nancy and Sarah—both names are
given her—two years his senior;
there was a cousin of his mother
ten yeaas older; Dennis Hanke an
active and ingenious leader in
sports and mischief and there
were the neighbors’ boys. Ono of
the latter Austin Gollaber still
tells with pleasure of.how he hunt-
ed coons and ran the woods with
young Lincoln and onco saved his
life.
“Yes” said Mr. Gollaher “the
story that I saved Abraham Lin-
coln’s life is true but it is not cor-
rect as generally related.
“Abraham Lincoln and I had
been going to school together for a
year or more and had become
greatly attached to each other.
Then school disbanded on account
of there being so few scholars and
we did not see each other for a long
while. One Sunday ray mother
visited the Lincolns and I was
taken along. Abe and I played
around all day. Finally we con-
cluded to cross the creek to hunt
some partridges young Lincoln
had seen the day before. The creek
was swollen by recent rain
and in crossing the narrow
foot-log Abe fell in. Neither
of us could swim. I got a long pole
and held it ont to Abe who
grabbed it. Then I pulled him
ashore. He was almost dead and
I was badly scared. I rolled and
pounded him in good earnest.
Then I got him by the arms and
shook him ihe water meanwhile
pouring out of his mouth. By
this time 1 succeeded in bringing
him to and he was soon all right.
“Then a new difficulty confront-
ed us. If our mothers discovered
our wet clothes they would whip
us. This we dreaded from expe
rience and determined to avoid.
It was Junethe day was very warm
and we soon dried our clothing by
spreading it on the rocks about us.
We promised never to tell the sto-
ry and I never mentioned the in-
cident to anyone until after Lin-
coln’s tragic end.
“Abraham Lincoln had a sister.
Her name was Sallie and she was
a very pretty girl. She went to
school when she could which was
not often.
“Yes if you must know Sallie
Lincoln was my sweetheart. She
was about my age. I loved her
and claimed her as boys do. I
suppose that was one reason for
my warm regard for Abe. When
the Lincoln family moved to Ind-
iana I was prevented by circum-
stances from bidding good-bye to
either of the children and I never
saw them again.”

How to Set up a Christmas Tree.
As generally set up the Christ-
mas tree is a rather shaky affair
top-heavy and in constant danger
of being tipped over when it is
touched. If you want a substan-
tial base for it but one that will
allow of Its being moved easily
without any danger of its being
upset go to some hardware store
and borrow a set of stove trucks.
Cover them with boards fastened
securely in their frames. In Jthe
centre make a hole large enough to
admit the base of your tree.
Fasten strips of wood from each
corner of the trucks to the tree in
such a manner as to brace it firm-
ly in place. The casters under the
frame will allow you to move the
tree easily and safely.—December

SIUDY OF THE MOON.
Peculiarities Noted in Its Appoar-
ancea at Different Beasoua
St Louis Republic.
To the casual observer the mo-
tions of the moon appear to be ex-
ceedingly whimsical and irregu-
lar. If its place in the sky is
watched it will be found that it is
first north and then south of the
sun’s path and that it is some-
times east and sometimes west of
that luminary. The last two mo-
tions are steady and regular from
east to west carrying the moon in
Pa eudlees swing around the
heavens starting at n w moon
near the sun and progressing until
at full moon the whole visible
portion of the sky Feparates the
two bodies. After this there are
two weeks in which the moon
still appears to move backward
approaching the sun from the
other side then again apparent
all of a sudden it passes the sun
and we behold a “new moon.”
The north and south motions of
the moon are entirely different.
While performing its endless jour-
ney from west to east there are
two special periods in which it
either moves far northward or
takes up its position low down In
the south. In spring the first mo
tion is northbut afterward thegen
eral motion is reversed. In Decem-
ber you will note that the ful)
moon occurs at the most northerly
point in her course and in June at
the most southerly. This is why
we have most light from the ful)
moon of winter and least from
that of summer. Observations on
these various movements indicate
to us the path which the moon
moves about the earth and also
shows us that that body in differ-
ent parts of its orbit is at varying
distances from the earth.
This indicates that the moon’s
path is not a circle but an ellipse
having the earth in one of its foci.
The moon being governed direct-
ly and held in position by tho at
traction of the earth holds its
primarj’ movements in a path
around our globe but the attrac
tion energy of the sun and of th<
giant planets perhaps in a lesser
degree produces motions in the
moon which may be summariz* d
briefly as a combination of the six
following movements: [l] Its
revolution about the earth ; [2]its
reolution with the earth about th<
sun; [3] the vibrating eccentrici-
ty of its orbit; [4] the slow direct
rotation in the “line of apside;” [s]
the retorgrade rotation in the
lino of nodes and [6] its rotation
on its axis.
It would be proper to enlarge
this “note” so as to give a full ex-
planation of the causes of each of
the above mentioned movements
but as such would require the use
of scores of diagrams and technic
al phrases such a feat can not bi
attempted as it would take up the
whole space allotted to this de-
partment.
