FRIDAY DECEMBER 6 ’95
Reed is not going to have any of
his appointments to chairmanships
criticised until he reports them to
the houes. He is keeping his coun-
sel and will lie awake nights study-
ing how to please every one and
displease no one. He has the job
of his life cutout for him.
Between resolutions for the rec-
ognition of Cuba and resolutions of
sympathy with the persecuted Ar-
menians there will be abundant
opportunity for oratory of the bun-
combe highfalutin kind. Tom
Reed and the president of senate
will need patience to listen to it
all.
War is the east would not be of
any disquieting character to
American interests in fact it
would be one of the opportunities
that this country has been waiting
for since the close of the dispute
between the states. It would turn
the tables our way. and aid us in
getting our money’s worth out of
the exchanges that have placed
this country so much at foreign
mercy.
The trouble in Turkey does not
prevent the disturbance in Ameri-
can states. There is a spirit of
revolution abroad in the whole
South and Central American re-
gion that promises poorly for the
tranquility of government there.
Prosperity only attends settled in-
stitutions.
The ruction between Cleveland
and congress is as likely to come
on the free wool question as any
other. Cleveland thinks that
American sheep have no right that
Australian bucks have any cause
to respect. There is another view
of the case taken by congress.
Spain is getting tired of the
manner in which Campos is put-
ting things through in Cuba. That
government may find that it is
easier putting down an insurrec-
tion so far from home on paper
than it is by force of arms. It
does seem however that with the
forces that he has at command
Campos might have made greater
progress. If this is not so then
the revolution in Cuba is a bigger
thing than Campos and his agents
and officers have represented.
There is no diminution to the
excessive friction that prevails in
the east. What it will in the end
amount to is beyond human calcu-
lation just now for no one knows
what Great Britain is likely to do
until the policy of Russia is made
clear and this is as. k clear as mud.
England has too much to lose
and two little to gain in having
her commerce preyed upon to
court war with the United States
and all the Latin American states
as well outside of Mexico. Sho
will consent to the arbitration of
the whole Venezuelan question
first.
The snub that the British ad-
ministration at London has given
the would-be British administra-
tion at Washington is a veryperti.
nent object lesson in politics. If
Grover was as great interiorily as
he is exterlorily there would not
have been such a result to his in-
terposition but England has taken
his measure very accurately. It
will be in order now for her to take
the measure of congress and the
American people and see the
difference.
There is a good deal of street be-
ing torn up by the sewer people
and it may all be necessary but to
the uninstructed itjooks as though
there might be a better arrange-
ment of forces in opening trenches
along the routes of rail lines so as
to impede travel less and this
without seriously interfering with
the progress of sewer construction.
It is to be hoped that the east-
ern owners of San Antonio railway
properties will soon come to an
understanding of the need of put-
ting their lines in this city in
proper running condition. The su-
perintendents and employes of
these lines cannot do more than
they are doing to give the public a
decent service but they get cursed
every day for what is not their
fault. The cursing is deserved
but the trouble is that it falls on
the wrong shoulders.
It is no credit to the marriage
laws of the country that the union
of Chinamen and American girls
is allowed. • The intermarriage of
these is every whit as much to be
deplored as that of blacks and
whites. God has separated these
and it is not pretty for man to join
them together.
England will not consent to ar-
bitrate the question of the Vene-
zuelan boundary outside of a cer-
tain line which she has herself
established as the delimitating
mark. That is to say she will in-
sist on her land grab then if there
is anything that Venezuela cares
to arbitrate after that is conceded
there will be no objection on the
part of Great Britain. What will
a congress wedded to the Monroe
doctrine say to this ultimatum of
Great Britain.?
There is nothing in the present
conditions in Cuba to really justify
the congress of the United States
tn pressing belligerent recognition
notwithstanding the feeling of the
people is so largely in that direc-
tion that any move that way would
be applauded to the echo.
Fort Worth congratulates her- 1
self that she has got beyond] the '
bonus turn in the road her rail-:
road facilities and her position j
making her sought after instead
of seeking. Fort Worth is up and
dressed but if she has weathered
bonne point she has not yet turned
the edge of failure reef.
The situation in Turkey contin-
ues strained.
The populists in the senate are
going to play a lone hand. Billy
Pfeffer will find that solitaire will
suit him better after his present
term in the senate expires.
The pope of Rome manifests a
lively interest in the situation in
Armenia and sends relief.
The republican majority in the
lower house is large enough to give
margin for any fool legislation
that may be desired but the level
heads in that body will take care i
of the cranks.
The recent poultry exhibit in
this city was too good to not be re-
peated next year.
Many men of many minds
scanned the message and many of
these minds made no bones of
uniting in declaring it one of the
thinnest documents ever set before
congress by a president.
A society for the prevention of
electric railway accidents in large
cities seems to be demanded by
the prevalence of such accidents as
result in the loss of life and limb.
When the change comes from
Pfeffer to Ingalls it will be as wel-
come to the rest of the country as
it will be to Kansas. Pfeffer and
Ingalls! What a yawning chasm
gapes between.
It seems impossible to have a
horse race in this city without
doctoring the result. This is the
reason why the races are so slimly
patronized in San Antonio.
It is no discredit to tho good
sense of the people of this city that
they do not tumble over each other
in their efforts to reach a racetrack
where the pool sellers run the ma-
chine.
Armenians are not guiltless in
the matter of the recent outrages.
This country has very little use
for a president or a party who can
forget nothing and learn nothing.
This is the matter with Cleveland
and the democracy.
The third term foolishness has
fallen to the ground as dead as a
twenty-five pound gobbler shot
from his perch in the dusk of the
early dawn. Since the late elec-
tion it has not peeped.

Disappointed and Suicided.
New York Dec. 6.—A special to
the Herald from Callaoa Peru
says: Herman Jansen a German
committed suicide in the lobby of
the president’s palace. He called
to see the president but was re-
fused admission. Jansen Is said
to have lost his fortune by sup-
porting Plesrola’s cause and it is
supposed his call was in reference
to his misfortune.
—Geo. W. Jenkins editor of the
Santa Maria “Times” Cal. in
speaking of the various ailments
of children said: “When my chil-
dren have croup there is only one
patent medicine that I ever use
and that is Chamberlain’s Cough
Remedy. It possesses some medi-
cal properties that relieve the little
sufferers immediately. It is in
mo opinion the best cough medi-
cine in the market.” If this reme-
dy is freely given as soon as the
croupy cough appears it will pre-
vent the attack. It is also an ideal
remedy for whooping cough. There
is no danger in giving it to chil-
dren as it contains nothing injuri-
ous. For sale by F. Kalteyer Chas.
