Tell me not of Spain’s proud mansions
Castles strong and stately halls;
Tell me not of Italia’s altars;
Of her old historio walls;
Or of Franc? with ‘ ‘Arch of Triumph ’
Royal pa'ace temples grand;
Or of towers or moss-grown ruins
By old England’s breezes landed.
Here within our fertile valley
Sheltered by the verdant hills

That each heart with pleasure thrills
Here Dame Nstore in her glainess.
Dons herrobo of splendid gold
To adorn our thriving city
Beauteous peerless San Antone.
Here are homes of wealth and grandeur
Sun-hissed bowers and coolest glades
Stately trees through whose branches
The last gleam of sunlight fades.
Here are temples proudly rearing
Their tali sentinels on high
Speaking to a Christian people
Of a home beyond the sky.

CAN ANTONIO! What ro-
@) mance tinges the name ; what
a bow of promise across the origin
of our future ! It brings with it on
the wings of the dawning of our
earliest morn the fragrance of the
wild valley flower and the story of
a dauntless band of pioneers in the
name of whose ‘‘ideal’' was baptized
this our city of the Alamo —the
THE ALAMO.
“ Violet Crown.” Bowie Crock-
ett Davis and other heroes be-
queathed to our city a name that
will live in history long after the
marble shaft crumbles into dust.
What these men suffered who bled
for Texas can never be known as
they were men who acted only and
there were not those among them
who simply recorded deeds. The
history of those days of trial and
heroism was in its fragmentary way
written long ago in hours of calm
and perfect security cannot.
;ven in the divinest ouhie portray
;he real emotions resolies or deeds
of those times that tried men’
souls.
San Antonio is called the “Ala
mo City”—in the very heart of th<
city stands the old Alamo mission
winch served as a fort for Travis
Crockett Bowie jind
band of heroes who fell in the
cause of American liberty after an
unexampled resistance to Santa
Anna with his army of Mexican
veterans. The Alamo has been ap-
propriately styled the Thermopelae
of Texas but while Thermopelae
had its messenger of defeat the
Alamo had none.

The career of a city is as the life
of an individual full of little things
that are of minor importance in
themselves but when taken in con-
nection as links in a chain of cir-
cumstances they possess a value
that is not to be discarded. But
of the thousands of every’ day hap-
penings there are many that are of
no significance and it is perhaps
more the conditions which exist as
a general result of these small
things that should be taken as the
pulse of the living corporate body.
Cause produces these conditions
however and while further on and
in various other portions of this
paper will be found many circum-
stances arising secondly from con-
ditions yet the object of this is to
recount in brief the successive steps
that have placed our beloved city’
in the position she now occupies.
San Antonio the city’ w’hose
merits we record has never had a
“boom.” Its growth has been
steady and natural. If the spiders
of conservatism are allowed to spin
the webs of caution in the window
of opportunity the people of a
city may become oblivious to thatl
which betokens a splendid future
as the bats are to the movements of!
Venus or the oscillations of Jupiter.
San Antonio has natural resources i
and favorable environments beyond I
any’ city of its class in Texas. It
has a disposition to develop these
resources. To advertise in some j
degree its claims on and promises
toward the investment of capital is
the purpose of this editior...

“A little learning is a dangerous thing
Drink deep or taste not the Pierian spring. o
The educational facilities of San
Antonio and the well established
reputation of its inhabitants for
literary and mental culture demon-
strates that the city is alive to the
truth of the above couplet and it is
therefore no source of surprise that
every genuine effort to provide the
public’s wants in this direction
should meet with great encourage-
ment. The large business done by
Mr. Roe demonstrates this fact.
February 1894 he bought out Dr.
Moss. The stock embraces holi-
day’ goods toilet sets toys teach-
er’s bibles Episcopal prayer books
handsomely’ bound copies of the
leading English and American
poets and the largest doll in the
city for one dollar.
REAL ESTATE.

e 104 EAST COMMERCE STREET.
One of the most encouraging and
convincing signs of activity in real
’ estate iq any city is the presence
therein of a large number of active
enterprising and prosperous real
estate agents and It is not saying
to much to state that tills gentle-
man is paritcularly prominent and
successful in real estate matters.
He has affected the transfer of a
large number of properties since
inception which have proven prof-
itable to his patrons. We simply
state that he is considered as abso-
lute authority upon all real estate
matters pertaining to tills city and
county’ and enjoys to the fullest
extent the confidence and esteem of
the public at large hence investors
at a distance need have no fears
that undue advantage will be tak-
en of them when placing their
business in Mr. Will’s hands. He
negotiates loans pays taxes does
collecting and assesses property
in fact attends to all the details
both minor and major connected
with this class of business. He

MODERN DENTISTRY.
Practice! ty Modern Men Who Be-
lieve in Dental Excellence.
Doctors Tinkhani and De
Young; Parlors at 502%
East Houston Street
U p st airs.
The treatment of the teeth is a
science. It is a science which in-
vites the best skill and talent and
to which more attention is being
given and justly too for nothing
is more essential to good health
than good teeth and their proper
care. Drs. Tinkham & Young the
popular dental firm of our city are
perhaps the most thoroughly’
modern dental operators in the
state. The public will find them
decided experts in all the late and
most approved styles of their pro-
fession especially in crown and
bridge work. Their work in this
line is truly superb and proficient
being performed at living prices.
In fact this class of work is
brought within the reaqh of all;
charges of .$5 per tooth for 22 karat
gold crown or bridge work.
Drs. Tinkham and De Young are
among the few dentists that have
awakened to the fact that to save
the natural organs of mastication
is the prime object of dental sci-
ence hence few teeth require ex-
tracting necessity demanding the
removal of broken or deceased
teeth. You will find them pre-
pared with all the latest and most
improved remedies for alleviating
pain in the extraction of teeth viz:
laughing gasOdontunder and their
own ne plus ultra of all painless
remedies. The tendency of the
times is towards lower prices;
don’t be misguided into paying
twice as much for yonr work as it i
is worth try these gentlemen at
popular prices and remember all
work is guaranteed for ten years. I
There is an erroneous idea prevail-
ing among the people that the gold
used by some dentists is superior
to that used by others. All dent-
itsts use the same pure gold for
filling in fact none but the chemi-
cally pure can be used forthat pur-
pose. It is true there are numer-
ous firms that manufacture dental
gold yet the purity is the same.
There is a difference in the price
of artificial teeth. Notwithstand-
ing this the reliable dentist that
warrants his work must use the
very best and most expensive ma-
terial hence the variation in the
prices of artificial teeth on plates.
The public will make no mistake
In patronizing this capable and
enterprising firm.

patronage he enjoys. Fourteen
years in San Antonio taking the

his best advertisement. His gal-

requisite to turn out perfect work.
Mr. Rothwell is a strict adherent
to modern photography and this
coupled with experience so neces-

We acknowledge our inability to
do anything like justice in a de-

I house. Suflice it to say that the
writer has visited thousands of
stores in the various lines of trade
and for elegance completeness of
linish and furnishings conven-
ience for patrons etc. it rivals all
and is entitled to the blue ribbon.
The stock is in keeping with the
surroundings and simply’ beggars
description. Speaking of the stock
it must be seen to be appreciated
and when we designate Mr. Sartor
the largest jewelry dealer in western
Texas we but do him justice. The
stock of diamonds attracted our |
attention by’ reason of their large 1
number and exquisite beauty. In
this line we believe that no house
in San Antonio carries as many’ or
as line a line. The line of watches i
is superb the solid and silver plat-
ed silverware is grand. Novelties I

basis of the success of this house.
