Aspermont School News |
1908-1909 |
OUR WAY:—Think Clearly; ¿
Will fearlessly; act immediately \
We are in great need of a li-
brary. A school without a li-
brary is never able to do the best
work. We need an unabridged
dictionary in the two higher
rooms; a good encyclopedia in
the High School department;
general supplementary books;
and, above all, some classics for
general reading. You who read
this think ways of meeting these
needs.
The pupils are very deficient in
their general reading. Until one
acquires the habit of reading
good books he must remain igno-
rant. The moment he acquires
this habit, he crosses the divide
that separates intelligence and
ignorance.
The school isthepractical place
to begin this habit. The school
cannot do it without the library.
We find that Aspermont parents
have not given due thought to the
selection of good papers and
magazines. Too many consider
the price and not the quality.
Such papers as "Good Stories,"
"Fireside Gems," "Hearthstone,'
"The Comfort," and a host of
others flood our homes. Such
papers are absolutely bad.
One of the greatest duties a
parent must perform is the se-
lection of proper reading matter
for his children. The County
paper, a good state paper should
be in every home. Then there
should be placed good magazines
and papers, such as "Review of
Reviews," and "Literary Digest"
for the grown folks; "Success,"
and "Country Life," for the boys
and girls and "St. Nichols" for
children.
Instead of trying to add acres
to your child's inheritance, add
gray matter to his brain—Add
good books, good magazines and
the habit of using them. No man
ever regretted having left his
child a good mind and the means
of preserving it; but thousands
have regretted leaving his son a
bank account and stocks and
bonds to replenish it. The first
proved helpful in the home of
trial: the second took wings and
soared away with the morning
light.
Believe me! Your best thought
along this line is your child's only
salvation. Act.
Card of Thanks.
We take this method of ex-
pressing thanks to our neighbors
and friends, one and all, for their
sympathy, kindness and help in
our affliction and bereavement in
the illness and death of wife and
mother. You will always be re-
membered with hearts of grati-
tude by us. May Heaven's rich-
est blessings abide with yon all.

State Fair Attractions.
Dallas, Texas, Sept. 2-5, 1908.
—For entertainment of its pat-
rons at the twenty-third annual
meet of the Texas State Fair,
October 17 to November 1, the
management will have the finest
free attractions in history. This
is based on the list of features
given below, as well as the amount
of money that is being expended.
Although busy with the prepa-
rations for the celebration of the
250th anniversary of the founding
of Philadelphia, Bandmaster
Phinney, who will bring his great
band here, spends a portion of
of the time each week in New
York, directing the rehearsals of
the eight grand opera stars that
will give condensed acts from
popular operas during the three
programs each of the sixteen days
of carnival. He is being ably as-
sisted in this rehearsal work by
Mme. Dora D. Fillippe, who
comes to Dallas as prima donna
of this octette of singers.
Miss Annie Laurie McCorkle,
a well known Dallas singer, who
has been studying in New York
for the past two years, has been
engaged by Mme. De Fillippe.
Mme. Fillippe writes that Miss
McCorkle is a very charming
young woman of refined and pre-
possessing appearance, possessing
a voice of beautiful quality, which
she uses with good taste and
musical feeling. This young
Texas singer has received the
highest of praise from the people
of this state, and the announce-
ment thatshe will sing at the Fair
hasbeen received with enthusiasm
As tenor of this octetto of stars
Signor Desiderio Pazzetti. who
comes from the famous school of
La Scala at Milan, Italy, hasbeen
engaged. His vocalizations in
the scenesfrom "Faust,""Lucia"
and other operas to be given, will
be a source of inspiration to musi-
cal students, and a pleasnre to
those who enjoy the art of good
singing in the highest form. Sig-
nor Pazzetti is well known on the
grand opera stage in Italy. He
came to America with Pietro
Mascagni, composer of "Caval-
leria Rusticana" and is considered
by that composer as one of the
great singers of the times.

"My honest conviction, based
upon my own experience and
that of my friends, is that
'Hunt's Cure' will cure a larger
per cent, of skin troubles, es-
pecially of an itching variety,
than any other remedy. Cer-
tainly those afflicted with any
form of itch should try it'"
