fared still worse. The opening at
New Orleans was 8 to 12 lower and
at New York II to 22 b*io» the close
on Sat ur.lay. and although a recov-
ery of alxiut ten pointa Sit witnessed
early in t »• sessu n on a forecast for
freezing weather the market soon
lost all of the Kain on reailiing in-
duced by a pathetic spot demand and
pnwpects of heavier receipts Ilian at
any time during th* season.
Prices were hammered severely in
an attempt to uncover stop orders
and shortly after noon the market
was ruling' quite weak at a g« neral
(b qHna of about 2" prints with only
slight support in evidence and that of
a covering character.
There was plenty of Justification
for the tanxiefy over the increased
movement Port receipts were 78.685
against 56.511 last year and although
last year’s movement for tomorrow
was a fairly heavy one estimates at
the south point to a to'ai of nearly
double that of a year agrt Houston.
Galveston and New Orleans Combine I.
expecting 122.000 to 128.000. against
only OlAti. and as the two first
named ports should get above SO.ooO
balfs. It is likely that the record of
MUM for ail ports will easily be
brakes tomorrow.
We have several times stated that
with a wild rampant bull market.
Buqh influences are recklessly disre-
garded but the moment a relapse In
either price or sentiment occurred
such matters would not only claim
th® attention of the trade but thefr
importance magnified the more they
wer considered.
With the increasing disposition to
taA profits and assistance from the
bear prices were hammered down to
a Ipvel of about 3o j oints when New
York closed and the feeling at ihat
tinfe s»as pretty well demoralized.

Private Wire Gossip From Snager &
a 4 Ettelson.
New York: The opinion around
the Exchange is that the market
should sell lower between now add
December 3.
Mew Orleans: Spots about L off.
Chicago: St. Louis. .Mo. wires:
“IJOO.OOo bushels December wheat
just settled here at 10c over Chi-
caf>.”
New York: Cables may surprise
most of the trade in v.ew of our
markets Saturday. It is pointed.
hoWever. in those advices that Liver-
pol operators would be in a degree
influenced by the heavy shipments
afloat. __
New Orleans: Market easier on
colossal receipts for Houston tomor-
row. /
New York: Decline In Li verpool
caused by heavy Continental Egyp-
tian selling.
New Orleans wires: "Tensas par
ish made 36.000 bales last year The
tax collector says it will not make
2000 this year."
New York: If there was ever a
time when the market should have
had a reaction It was this morning.
Nearly everything favored it. re-
ceipts were tremendous the cables
were weak and In many instances
the trade favored a decline to a more
attractive buying level it just looks
however as if a'lot of people who
have been wishing they had gotten
into the market earlier are waiting
for 20 point set-backs to buy and
consequently this morning after sell-
ing 16 to 21 points net lower the
market recoyeied to a level about
3 U> 10 points lower on good demand
from scattered sourcesfrom the bull
leader from New England interests
and from spot houses. Following
this fluctuations while comparative-
ly narrow and irregular showed little
actual tendency either way. The es-
tiiflate tor tomorrow's receipts was
record breaking as to size. On the
other hand exports from Galveston
were reported likely to reach 61.000
bales and it is as yet difficult to see
what the tremendous amounts of cot-
ton ‘'arriving into sight are bearing
ln; the least upon si»ot prices. We
“would not like to say that the move-
ment was furnishing any indication
that the crop has been underestimat-
ed: Planters may be<giad to get such
prices as these and may be selling
faster than ever before the Census
. Bureau Dinners’ Report indicating
’ that the crop was being marketed
about 6 per cent faster in proportion
to.picking than last year.. It is a
splendid market for scalping once
the swing is caught.—Bache.

CUBAN BILL IN CONFESS
THE MEASURE Iff UNDER CONBID*
ERATION IN THE MOUSE.
Representative Ball Will Hold His
Seat Until a Successor Has Been
Named—Cooper's Bill to Prevent
Fraud.
Special to The Dally Light
Washington. D. C Nov. 16 —Repre-
sentative Hall of the Houston Texas
district has returned to Washington
and has resumed iSs duties In the
house <>f representatives. He will con-
tinue to bold his seat until his resig-
nation takes effect. Mr. Ball upon
his return to Washington and upon
his reappearance In the house of rep-
resentatives received the cordial
greeting of his many friends on the
Democratic side of the chamber. The
retirement of Mr Ball fn.m th' low el
branch of congress will Ih- much he-
greted by his associates In the Texas
deleAtion.
.Members of the Mississippi and
Texas delegations in congress seem to
prefer Judge Parker of New York as
a presidential candidate although
Senator Gorman has some enthusias-
tic supporters The New Yorker how-
ever. seems to l>e the favorite. One
of the members stated Friday after-
noon that he favors Parker because
he comes from a doubtful state. Mary-
land. he saiQ. is sure for the Democ-
racy next year no matter whom the
party names but New York will be
close and Une of the Texas
delegation asserted thaT* he thinks
Judge Parker would be the stronger
candidate because he has not been so
active in politics. He thinks Texas
will send a delegation in favor ct
Judge Parker. But. he added. Texas
is for the man who is nominated and
can be elected.
The active work of the s|tecial ses-'
sion will be begun by the house of rep-
resentatives today. The Cuban reci-
procity bill will be taken up for con
sideration and will be passed by the
end of the week. It is the policy of
the . bousu leaders to -put the bill
through as rapidly as possible ami to
get the measure in the senate as it
is realized that the difficulty in the
upper branch will be much greater
than in the house. After the disposi-
tion of the bill by Uje.bouse it is said
the Republican leaders will adopt the
policy of preventing other legislation
and that frequent adjournments for
three days at a time will be resorted
to.
The sessions of the senate until the
Cuban bill passes the house will be
short The senate may however do
some other work. The action on nom
inations will help to keep the tipper
branch busy the early part of this
week.
Representative Cooper has intro
duced a bill in tfi’e house to revive ami
amend an act to provide for the col-
lection of abandoned property ami the
prevention of fraud in insurrectionary
districts of the United States and
aqfs amendatory thereto.
A numlter of private bills have been
introduced by members of the Texas
delegation.
A MQVE AMONG DRUGGISTS.
Its Object to Stop Cutting Prices on
New York. Nov. 16.—A1l three
branches of the drug trade— manufac-
turers. jobbers and retailers—are
greatly interested in the outcome cf
r movement just by sev-
eral leading manufacturers of medi-
cinal articles to stop price-cutting < n
patent medicines. For years the prac
tice is said to have demoralized the
drug trade and all efforts to stop it
have thus far failed except in some
sections of the country where com!!
tions have improved as a result of the
anti-rate cutting crusade. The plan
now about tc be tried originated with
the manufacturers and proprietors anil
aims at the-Control of prices on their
goods all over the country. If a retail
druggist persists in cutting prices it
is the intention of manultketurera by
the new agreement according to the
Journal of Commerce to stop supply-
ing that cutter with their goods and.
if necessary to cut off those who are
found to be supplying tjie cutter. Co-
operation by the proprietors has now
been secured and the manufacturers
will at once proceed to establish min-
hmnn prices for their wares.
