BLOOD SPOTS IN THE EYE
If you have a blood spot on the white
area of your eyeball, this condition is
known as a sub-conjunctival hemor-
rhage. It may be as tiny as a pinhead or
much larger, and often there is no blur-
ring of vision, no pain or discharge to
make it seem alarming. But it should not
be ignored.
Sometimes the hemorrhage is
caused by a break in one of the tiny
blood vessels on the surface of the eye-
ball. It tends to spread out in the space
between the sclera (or white of the eye)
and the conjunctiva (the thin transparent
membrane which covers it). Tears won’t
wash it away because it is under the
conjunctiva.
This can happen even to a person
with healthy eyes. But it is more common
in older persons or those who have
high blood pressure, diabetes, ane-
mia, or hardening of the arteries. It
may also be caused by stress or
strain due to an injury or heavy lifting.
Only an examination by your eye doc-
tor can determine the cause and how
the condition can best be treated.
