2 challengers
seeking to
unseat Shapiro
By NANCY DONISI
Staff writer
While state Sen. Florence
Shapiro, R-Plano, has two chal-
lengers for her District 8 legisla-
tive seat, she said this year’s race
“has not been heated.”
Independent candidate Paul
Bertanzetti and Libertarian hope-
ful John Wawro are both trying to
unseat the one-term incumbent.
Bertanzetti, a 44-year-old small
business owner, ran an unsuc-
cessful campaign in the 1992
Republican primary against state
Rep. Will Hartnet of Dallas.
He said, however, that he
learned a lot from that campaign
and has since dissolved his
Republican affiliation to run as an
Independent candidate.
“I felt it was the best way to
approach the campaign,”
Bertanzetti said. “There’s a large
segment of the people who have
an independent perspective, and
there’s a large percentage who

Madden faces

re-election quest
By NANCY DONISI

Seeking his second term as
state representative for the 67th
District, Republican Jerry
Madden faces an independent
challenger in Brian Morgan.
As an incumbent, Madden said
he thinks his experience as a
state legislator since 1992 gives
him an advantage over his chal-
lenger.
‘When I was elected two years
ago, I didn’t know what was
ahead,” he said. “I think my abili-
ty to be effective is much greater
now.”
If re-elected, Madden said his
No. 1 priority in the upcoming
session is to continue working on
a judicial campaign reform bill.
This proposed legislation
would curtail the amount of
funds expended on campaigns
for judges, and limit the amount
of donations.
