Frequent and cheerful letters from his home are of great benefit to the
recruit and they are the best means of encouraging him to write home frequently.

----, who recently enlisted in the Navy, arrive
at thi  tation or preliminary recruit .training for service in the Navy.
Upon the satisfactory completion of his preliminary training each recruit is
listed either for assignment to a-sea-going vessel or, if considered qualified, for a
course in a Service School. Upon the satisfactory completion of the Service School
course the recruit then becomes available for sea assignment. However, before being
sent to sea each recruit is generally granted a "leave" period not in excess of nine
days to visit his home or that of relatives provided he can show that he has sufficient
personal funds, or that such will be furnished by his family, to cover all necessary
expenses of travel to his destination and return to this Station.
