THE PASTOR SAYS:
Think on this:
“Activity, to
be effective,
must spring
from convict-
ion.”
“When we phi
losophize, the
mind is act-
ive.
When we con-
template beau
tiful things,
our emotions
are stirred.
When we take duty seriously, we
find we must act.
But in religion, thought, emotion,
and conduct, are all involved.
Religion alone, attempts to unify
all of life, to give our many sided
nature its enduring satisfaction.”
“Religion is the undying fire of
human aspiration.”
“To Jesus the sin of all sins was
insistence on one’s own will. All
other sins are only forms of this basksi
and all inclusive sin. The way to be
delivered is in yielding oneself to
God in complete surrender.”
“What men need is not simply a
new environment, but a new self.”
“Nothing can control passion but
another stronger passion.” The word
passion touched by the power of
Christ controls all others and organ-
izes them into an army of purposes
and principles and wins life eternal.”
“We must make God’s will our will.
Then, and then only, shall we find
all things working together for our
good.”
DREAMS THAT NEVER COME
TRUE
“And Jacob dreamed, and behold,
a ladder set up on the earth and the
top of it reached to heaven: And be-
hold the angels of God ascending and
decending on it. Very pretty, but
it was only a dream. It never came
true for Jacob nor is it true today.
He was soon to learn that people do
not go to heaven with such ease.
Jesus himself said, strive, struggle,
organize to enter in.
We must pass through, it seems,
refining fires. Jacob awoke to find
his head pillowed on a stone and a
rough road before him. But the big
lives of earth have all been struggl-
ing lives. The mother of 0 Henry,
Mary S. Porter, used as her gradu-
ating essay “The Influence of Misfor-
tune on the gifted,” which in the life
of her son, William Sydney, was to
receive a strange and striking ful-
fillment. The road to fame and for-
tune is not the way of ease. So the
road to Heaven it seems is the way
of the cross, and thorn crown. But
th € ervant is not above his Lord.
“Must Jesus bear the cross alone,
And all the world go free?
No, there’s a cross for everyone,
And there’s a cross for me.”
YESTERDAY
Today is gone. To recall it is im-
possible. Tomorrow is uncertain. If
it does come, it will then be today.
So all we have is the present-today-
now. How shall we use it?
STORM
A small fisherman’s ship was being
tossed by the angry waves of the sea
and beaten and torn by the winds of
the storm. Then Jesus appeared
unto them walking on the sea. And
saying “It is I be not afraid.” Then
they willingly received into the ship,
and' immediately the ship was at
land whither they went.” Take Jesus
into your life. He stills the tempest
and immediately you arise in life
you have anchored sure.
CHAOS
“The earth was with out form,
and void; darkness was upon the face
of the deep. And the spirit of God
moved upon the face of the waters.”
Then we are told that out of the cha-
otic state comes light, order, beauty
and life.
So: When a life is in a state of
chaos, and darkness is over the soul,
if the spirit of God be permitted to
enter, he will brood and with a mo-
ther’s love bring light, order beauty
and life eternal to the disordered soul.

THE EPWORTH LEAGUE
Miss Louise Howdeshell, President
of the Epworth
League called a Bus-
iness session at the meeting Sunday
evening for the purpose of arranging
a “stunt” to be given at the League
Union Friday night. The Clay Ave-
nue Church will entertain the League
Union on Friday night at the Man-
noecher Hall. Each of the Leagues
of the city is to prepare a stunt to be
given that night and the one putting
on the best one will carry their stunt
to the District League Meeting to be
held at a later date at the Methodist
Home. The winner of the District
will get to go to the League Assem-
bly at Fort Worth at some time in
the near future. We are hoping that
a large number from Austin Avenue
will be present Friday night.
