TAX TIPS
Eighth in a series of “tax tip” articles provided by
the Fort Worth Chapter of the Texas Society of Certified
Public Accountants.
Q. What are the tax consequences if I make gifts to several
of my relatives?
A. Gifts are made out of “after tax” dollars. That is,
there is no income tax deduction for gifts. However, the
donor of the gift may have to pay a gift tax if the gift is
over a certain amount. A taxpayer may give, free of
tax, up to $10,000 each year to each of an unlimited number
of donees. This amount may be increased to $20,000
if a special election is made between spouses who are
making the gift.
In addition, a donor may give, free of gift tax, un-
limited amounts for a donee’s medical expenses or quali-
fying school tuition. There also is an unlimited exemption
for qualifying gifts to a taxpayer’s spouse.
Gifts greater than the above limits may still escape
gift tax with the use of the unified estate and gift tax
credit. A gift tax return must be filed to report gifts
above limits even if no tax is due.
