With the coming vf Eastertide the
windows of the florists will be filled
with a profusion of gorgeous Easter
Flowers whose perfume is sweeter than
incense. From these will be chosen
all the members of the lily family and

rious churches on Easter morn when

Assembling last night at the St. An-
thony hotel some of the prominent for-
mer citizens of Illinois formed what is
to be known as' the Illinois dub. the
purpose of which will be to bring the
Illinoisans together in order that the
memory of the old state shall not be
forgotten. ■

MEXICAN IS ADMITTED
TO INSANE ASYLUM
For the first time iu a year aud a half
. or during the incumbency of Jailer J.
IL Parker at the Bexar county jail a
’ Mexican has been admitted »to the
Southwestern Insane asylum. Whether
I or not the recommendation of the recent
I grand jury had anything to <lo with it
is unknown.
Jailer Parker this morning received
I an application admitting Daniel Mar-
I tinez to the asylum. Since he went into
i office over a year ago there have ben
no Mexicans admitted to the asylum
and this fact was taken by the grand
jury as evidence that discrimination ex-
isted in that institution. At the same
time the grand jury recommended that I
the next grand jury investigate.

last night the Elks elected officers for
the ensuing year. W. E. Roach replac-
ing Leon A. Baer as secretary. Mr.'
( Baer has held the place for the past

only amoug the Elks of Sau Antonio
but also throughout the state. Mr.
Roach is equally prominent in the ranks:
of the antlered herd.

Saal a 16-ycar-old sales girl told in
court today how her quick wit saved
her from a brutal attack nt the hands
of Frank Pippe who had seized her by
the throat while she was alone in the
shop. Having no other means ol at
tratting attention site hurled a hand-
ful of change against the window. The
breaking of the window brought a po-
liceman.
EARTH TREMORS IN
CHICAGO CAUSE FEARS
< hicago 111.. March 8. —Earth tremors
felt yesterday along the entire shore
line of the city caused many persons to
believe a mild quake had shaken north-
ern Illinois. Professor Cox of the
weather bureau said:
"We have no instruments in our of-
fice for recording earthip.skes. If
tremors were felt I am of the opinion
they were caused by the lake ice break-
ing up.”
Professors Salisbury ami Chamber
lain of the geological department of the
University of Chicago said they had
neither heard nor felt any tremors.

Claiming that his foot slipped on a
banana peeling which lay on the steps
of a eoach in which he was a passen
ger and that as a result his left foot
and log was wrenched and broken in
such manner as to necessitate amputa-
tion. William Eaton a traveling man
has filed suit against- the Galveston.
Harrisburg * San Antonio railway for
the sum of $35000 damages. The aeei
dent is alleged to have occurred at
Victoria on October 7. 19<>8 and plain
tiff claims Hint he has been disabled
for life and prevented from sustaining
his earning capacity.

at 7 o'clock to treat A. 8. Allen who
was suffering from carbolic acid burns
in the mouth. Allen had taken n

spit out the poison without swallowing
it. Allen is 20 years old and is an ac
tor on the vaudeville stage. He was
at the Royal three weeks ago. but has
been out of employment since that
time.

ing. Part of the road was very hilly)
and bad and a tire broke. Repair-1
ed however the trip was taken up'
and after an exploration of the ranch;
they all had a spread under the trees.
The pnrty returned at about 6 o’clock in
the evening.

Both of the visiting Eagles are very

I ready seen here and arc loath to go acv
further on their trip. Mr. Driffler ex-
i pressed the same sentiment as that of

' follow that Eagle in his flight to Sau
Antonio as the best nest on earth.
