Values at Austin Have Already
Raised and Are Expected
to Go Higher.
BOOM ONLY JUST BEGUN
tn West Austin Nearest Site
Values Have Been Dou-
bled In Past Week.
- . I
Special Dispatch.
Austin Tex.. March 25.—Tie people
of Austin have already been praticaDy
compensated for the building of the
new dam by the great increase In real
estate values here in the last few days.
Values have increased more than
$1000000 already aud a boom that will
rival anything in the history of the
state will be on when the dam contract
is approved.
In West Austin particularly that
part nearest the daiu values have dou-
bled and all over the city property of-
fered for sale two weeks ago has been
withdrawn from the market to be held
for a better price. Austin land hits
suddenly become a gilt-edge invest-
ment and hundreds are buying even in
the remote new additions which have
been opened up in the last few days.
“Ridgetop.” one mile north of the city
limits is the latest addition while
“The Highlands." is still finding buy-
ers. East Austin will also feel the boom
in almost as large a degree as West
Austin on account of offering good land
to the white resident at comparatively
low price. The values in this part of
the city have been held down on ac-
count of negroes and a poor class of
dwellings.
What the new bridge and street car
line will do for South Austin was shown
yesterday when real estate agents re-
ported that several sales had fallqn
through in that section because owners
were already demanding better prices.
The new line will place South Austin
nearer to- the dam than many parts ofi
the city proper now having better faei.
lities.
Values on Congress avenue have been
boosted by four new buildings two
now under construction being eight
stories high and these values are fur
ther enhanced by the prospect that the
dam will be rebuilt.
The rebuilding meads more money ii|
the city treasury. Austin's city limits
were extended up the river to and be
yond the dam when it was first built
and a flourishing suburb sprung up
while the structure stood. This laud
now used for farming and grazing will
be cut into lots when the new dam is
rebuilt. It will be connected with tliq
business section by a new ear line and
win be closer than Hyde park where
lots are selling for $2OO to $5OO with
an increase of $25 per lot announced
on April 5.

Catania. Sicily March 25. — A
red hot bed of lava 1200 feet wide
and thirty feet in height is sweep- i
ing down the sides of Mount Etna
and destroying everything in its
path which now extends nine
miles. Five thousand people have
been left homeless by the destruc-
tion of several villages and half a
dozen more villages in the path
of the molten river have been de-
serted and abandoned to destruc-
tion.
Professor Ricco believes from
observations that the eruption has
only just begun.
'lne people are in a panic and the ef-
forts of the soldiers are required to
keep order. Scores of people have been
injured and three large towns Nadolo
Casadel and Borneo have been buried.
Krattli and Aderno are in the direct line
of tie lava river and will be destroyed
in a few hours.
The lava is headed direct toward
Catania a city of 150.000 people and
unless its flow is stopped the city seems
doomed. Religious services are being
held in every town in Italy and pray-
ers are being offered for divine inter-
vention.
The city is crowded with refugees
and tourists.
