HUNTING NEAR
SAN ANTONIO
Season Has Been a Poor One
and Game Is Scarce. In
Nearby Territory.
FEW DOVES AND QUAIL
Deer Season Ends Saturday
and But Few of Them Have
Been Bagged By Hunters.
The open season for killing deer
will close at midnight December 31.
j Saturday is the last day in which a
person may lawfully kill a deer. The
game laws permit other game to be
killed for a longer period but after
Saturday the high power rifles and
Winchesters must be laid aside.
While November and December
have been ideal months for deer
hunting on account of weather con-
ditions. the season now almost closed
is classed by sportsmen as a "punk
season. Fewer deer have been kill-
|ed. it is reported this season than for
many years past. Quail and dove*
fare also reported scarce this year.
’ I “A man may as well go In his back
yard as to go out twelve or fourteen
miles to kill doves or quail" said T.
। Alvin Luter. deputy game commis-
sioner for southwest Texas. "I don't
know how to account for the scarcity
Iof birds in this section unless it is be-
i cause of the drouth. Few deer have
been killed this season probably l.e-
icause there are not many in this rr
surrounding counties. There is little
good hunting now within a radius of
: fifty miles of San Antonio. Duck
shooting this year has not been very
] encouraging. I believe the best hun’-
Ing now is alone the coast country
and in the Rio Grande valley.
"There has been little cover for the
came around here this year" con-
tinued Mr. Luter. "There is no grass
or brush to speak of and the game
can not live on trees alone. The
drouth is about the only reason that
may be advanced for the V’arclty of
■|the game in these parts. With good
rains during the coming year how-
ever. hunting should be excellent next
season."
Since Christmas day several parties
of San Antonians have taken to the
woods to spend the balance of the
holidays gunning. Quail and doves
may be killed until February 1. with- I

' Associated Preu.
Chjcago. III. Dec. 28.—Telegraph
and telephone companies reported!
early this morning that weather con-
; ditions threaten a serious crippling of!
I service in the middle west with al
- । possibility that Chicago may be cut ।
. (off from direct communication both!
’ east and west.
’ A wet heavy snowstorm originating
a in the west traveled eastward all night
t and interfered with the transmission
s of messages on nearly all trunk lines.
Rain gradually turning to snow in In-
diana. caused serious wire delay there.
: This necessitated the routing of much
telegraphic matter.
I If the weather turns colder soon it
i is feared that a general prostration of
. wire service may result.

BILL FOR PROTECTION
OF STREET CAR MEN.
A new bill requiring street car com-
panies to equip their cars with inclos-
ed platforms to protect motormen and
conductors from inclement weather
will be introduced by State Senator
Earl B. Mayfield at the next session
of the legislature.
The old street car vestibule law was
repealed about a year ago by the su-
preme court. It being held that the
law placed restrictions upon corpora-
tions. as it did not specify that ears
owned and operated by individuals or
associations need comply with the law
The new bill is drawn up to cover
these defects and the passage of It is
expected.
