department at Auatin. who hava/made

two sample* one quart each were
taken from the river near the Crock-
ett street bridge.
A microscopical examination of
the aediment In the samples showed
a large quantity of animal and vege-
table matter —lari ae. spores etc—a
good breeding place for animal lite.

Total solids 4.1$
Ammonia .1 0.083
Albuminoid Ammonia 0.142
oxygen consumed 0.207
Chlorine 4.30
Nitrite Trace
Nitrogen as Nitrates 0.47
No bacteriological examination was
made the chemists stating that It was
Inconceivable that the water was
used by human beings.
Since the meeting Tuesday night
at which the question of restoring
the river was discussed a great
amount of Interest has been shown
and considerable discussion has taken
place as to the best means to remedy
its present condition.
Build Rock Walls.
The suggestion seeming to gain
the most favor is that of W. G. Tobin
that rock walls be built on each side
of the river leaving a channel
J twenty or thirty feet wide the bot-
' tom of which should be cleaned out
and laid with small rocks The mud
taken out. it Is said could be used
to fill in on the bank side of the
walls
In thia way it Is pointed out. prop-
erty owners along the river could re-
claim enough land to reimburse them
for construing the wall and at the
same time add to the beauty of the
river and thus enhance the value of
their property.
Will Consider all Plans.
All of these suggestions will he
taken under consideration by the
committee on organiiatlon of the
River Improvement association and
submitted In more detailed form at
the organization meeting which is to
be called In the near future.
As soon as the best means of re-
storing and beautifying the river is
determined an effort will be made to
interest the city administration in the
plan and a canvass for funds will be
made to carry cn the work.
