THE LIGHT’S DAILY SHORT STORY
(By Louise Heitgers.)
"Esme come home” he said.
The woman looked up at him with
a hard laugh.
•■Presently" she said and swung
her fan.
The lines deepened about his
mouth.
"Now!” he said peremptorily. She
turned from him with a shrug of her
white shoulders —turned so that he
could not see her face but only the
coil of auburn hair lying loosely
knotted at her neck. "You were say-
ing?" she said with airy Insolence to
her partner.
When she looked round again her
husband was gone. "Vernon is really
too tiresome" she said then to the
man who lounged beside her. "He
thinks marrying a woman means
shutting her up in a cell.”
“Well isn't matrimony penal serv-
itude of a kind?" asked her compan-
ion lazily. “Not that I would mind
it with you for fellow convict” he
wound up with a sudden ardor.
She was very fair lying back there
upon the cushions their greenness
holding her black frock and vivid
hair in an emerald frame.
He leant over her his eyes ardent.
"You will come for that motor tour
won’t you?” he urged. "You can fix
Vernon somehow.”
His voice was anxious. She was
merely amused.
“Vernon's all right. He'll be away
next week. There’s no need to tell
a husband what he doesn't know. Ig-
norance is the best wisdom some-
times.”
His hand closed hard on hers.
“The only wisdom" he whispered
"little girl Is love.”
She was young and vain and Jool-

ish. They 1 sat far apart from the
rest of the dancers. There was no
one to tell her that the truest wis-
dom of all is the wisdom of the wise
the wisdom of the people who see
the worm behind the rose the skull
beneath the woman's skin the night
behind the sun. the end of all.
It was the end of all when she
sat In the stuffy gray court with her
hands clasped together in front of
her her face burning behind her
veil listening to the smooth voice
of the man who said such vile things
In honeyed tones.
It could not be of her he was
speaking. She wasn't a faithless wife
really. It wasn't her fault the car
had broken down and she had to
spend all night at the hateful inn.
She had not done anything wrong.
She stared aghast at the house of
intrigue the counsel built from her
foolishness. Cold with despair she
watched him add lie after lie to it
watched it rise higher and higher
saw herself buried forever among its
ruins when its cruel work finished
the counsel would brush it aside as
though of no less account than a spi-
der's web.
She looked across at her husband.
He was staring down at the floor.
She noticed there were gray threads
in his hair gray threads that hadn't
been there a few short months ago.
whereas no man had ever counted
to her as a man save Vernon. She
was his wife.”
A wonderful thought came to her
suddenly on a gleam of sunshine that
drifted suddenly into the dusty court.
All this was a dream. She was with
Vernon on her wedding night sitting
on a balcony. His arms were round
her her head on his breast. “Until
death my wife." he said and kissed
her fiercely. He hadn’t known then
It was a crueller thing than death
that would part them.
"I submit your honor that this
woman ” She came back to real-
ity with a start.
Her mouth was dry. In all -the
world there was nothing but that
smooth voice speaking lies.
* • •
She came away from court. She
was a poor thing and ashamed; she
crept through the streets fearing to
look at men's faces lest she should
read in their eyes their condemna-
tion.
Near the hub of Piccadilly she
paused and stared blindly at the
swirling traffic. Someone stood sud-
denly beside her.
She looked up her senses reeling.
“Esme come home” he said.
