City Chiefs probably won’t be in 1
the best physical shape tonight 1
when they battle the Chicago 9
Bears in a nationally televised ■
game. That game is said to be ■
of considerable importance to I
both National Football League 1
clubs.
Chief’s quarterback Len p
Dawson definitely is out of
action for the second straight 1
week, with a heel injury. Mike 1
Livingston will be called in
again. Kansas City’s crack
receiver, Otis Taylor, has fluid "
on his knee but is expected to
start. Split end Robert West and 1
offensive tackle Francis Peay |
are sidelined because of in- 1
juries. And offensive tackle Jim g
Tyrer has a shoulder ailment 1
and is doubtful.
The Bears, with no injured ■
players, have a three-and-five "
record and are bordering on 1
elimination from the central §
division race. Kansas City has a h
four-three-one record in the 1
American conference west. a
NEW YORK — In 1969,
running backs Bill brown and
Dave Osborn helped the Min-
nesota Vikings get to the Super
Bowl. Yesterday the veteran
duo boosted the Vikings a step
closer toward returning to that
championship confrontation.
Brown ran 101 yards and
Osborn 79 yards to lead Min-
nesota to a 28-to-7 victory over
Detroit in the National Football
League. The decision gave
Minnesota at least a tie for the
National Conference Central
Division title.

The Cleveland Browns blew
Houston to bits in the first
quarter of yesterday’s
American football conference
game, then sat back and wat-
ched the Oilers try to put the
pieces together.
Cleveland racked up 17 points
in the first quarter, then coasted
to a 23-to-13 win over Houston,
which had a minus six yards in
the fatal period. But the Oilers
had outgained the Browns by
ten yards by the end of the
game.
PINEHURST, North Carolina
— The leader in the half milion
dollar would open in Pinehurst,
N.C. is golf pro Gibby Gilbert.
The 74 survivors from the
original field of 240 have today
and tomorrow off. They begin
four more rounds of play
Wednesday and the tournament
ends Saturday.
Gilbert twice quit the tour in
disgust and almost did it again
this year. However, yesterday
he seemed pleased with his
score of 70 and his five-shot
lead. Gilbert was the only man
to break par for the first 72
holes, putting together a 280
total, four under par. Tom
Watson and former National
PGA champion Al Geiberger
were next at 285, one over par.
Each had a 68 in yesterday’s
round, the best of the cold,
windy day.

While the letter reportedly did
not specifically say so, Bloom
says the ABA would prefer a
team in the LA area, as
opposed to the San Diego area.
The comment came on the heels
of two weekend victories which
leave the Conquistadors with a
six and nine season mark.

By Associationed Press
President Nixon has
scheduled a half dozen
meetings with congressional
republicans this week. These
are in addition to today’s
planned White House breakfast
with the GOP coordinating
committee.
Nixon is said to be in-
tensifying efforts to explain his
side of the Watergate matter.
The White House says Nixon
will eventually meet with some
democratic congressmen but no
schedule has been set.
Speaking on NBC’s “Meet the
Press,” Senator Charles Percy
said yesterday that he thinks
this is the beginning of full and
total disclosure. He said at least
nine hours will be spent by the
President being interrogated by
members of Congress on
