UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS S. FLATAU, OF PITTSBURG, TEXAS.
PISTOL AND CARBINE HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 252,448, dated January 17, 1882.
Application filed November 16, 1881. ( Mode.)To all whomt it may concern:
Be it known that I, LouIs S. FLATAU, of
Pittsburg, in the county of Camp and the State
of Texas, have invented a new and Improved
5 Pistol and Carbine Holder, of which the fol-
lowing is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide
cheap and efficient means for carrying fire-
alms either upon the person or on horseback,
to the same being so constructed that the arm
may be quickly and easily drawn .for use and
easily returned to place in the holder.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying
drawings, forming a part of this specification,
15 in which similar letters of reference indicate
corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view, partly in section, of
my invention as it appears when attached to a
belt to be worn upon the person, a pistol be-
20 ing shown in place; and Fig. 2 is a perspec-
tive view of the holder, a portion of the belt,
and thebutton, the arm being removed to more
clearly show the construction.
A represents the belt; B, the steel plate,
25 which is riveled to the belt; C, the bifurcated
metal spring, which is riveted to the said plate;
and D represents the arm. The arm is pro-
vided with the button a, a hicb,in this instance,
forms a part of the pin upon which the ham-
30 mer of the arm is pivoted, and which is adapt-
ed to pass between and under the parts or
prongs c e of the spring, as clearly shown in
the drawings.
Immediately under the point where the parts
35 c of the spring join the plate B is depressed,
as shown at d-in Fig. 1, and at this point the
parts of the spring are somewhat cut asay, as
shown at i i, Fig. 2, to form a sort of journal
or seat for the button to restin for holding the
40 arm securely; and when the arm is to be re-
moved the button and the depression have a
cam action upon each other, so that a slightpull upon the arm will cause the spring to be
forced upward and permit the arm to be quickly
and easily drawn. 45
The ends of the parts e c of the spring are
slightly upturned to facilitate the insertion of
the button under and between them in the act
oT replacing the arm in the holder; and to still
further facilitate the passage of the button un- 50
der the parts of the spring the plate B is cut
away to a point under theiinner corners of the
parts of the spring, as shown atf in Fig. 2.
In cases where the arm is to be carried is a
pistol or revolver of ordinary constr uction the 55
button should be formed on the hammer-pivot,
as then the additional expense will be very
slight. In case the arm is a breech -loading
carbine, or other similar arm, the button may
form a part of the pin upon which the breech- 60
block is pivoted ; but I do not wish to be on-
derstood as confining myself to any particular
attachment of the button, as it can be at-
tached in various ways and still involve the
principle of my invention, and I do not wish 65
to be understood as conflining in\self to any
special means of attachment of the holder to
the person or s:iddle, as this also may be ac-
complished in various ways.
Having thus described Imy invention, I claim 70
asnen and desireto secure by Letters Patent-
1. The combination of tie belt A, the plate
B, secured thereto, the springC, having profgs
c c, made fast to plate B and adapted to hold
the arm D, with its button a, as shown and de- 75
scribed.
2. The combination of the prongs c c, up-
turned at the ends, and the plate B,.c t away
to allow the passage of the button, as shown
and described.
LOUIS S. FLATAU.
