Lousy Cops!
EDITOR’S NOTE: The
following article appeared in
the Texas DPS magazine.
We thought the local Cops
and readers might
identify with what the article
has to say.
Well, Mr. Citizen, I guess
you’ve figured me out. I
seem to fit neatly in the
category where you’ve
placed me.
I am stereotyped, charac-
terized, standardized, classi-
fied, grouped and always
typical. Unfortunately, the
reverse is not true—I can
never figure you out.
From birth you teach your
children that I’m the bogey-
man, and then you’re
shocked when they identify
me with my traditional
enemy, the criminal.
You accuse me of coddl-
ing juveniles until I catch
your kid doing wrong. You
may take an hour for lunch
and several coffee breaks
each day, but you point me
out as a loafer if you catch
me having just one cup.
You pride yourself on your
polished manners, but think
nothing of disrupting my
meals with your troubles.
You raise hell with the guy
who cuts you off in traffic,
but let me catch you doing
the same thing and I’m
picking on you. You know all
the traffic laws, but you’ve
never gotten a single ticket
you deserve. *
You shout ‘foul’ if you
observe me driving fast to an
emergency call, but raise
hell if I take more than ten
seconds to respond to your
call.
You call it ‘part of my job’
if someone strikes me, but
it’s police brutality if I strike
back.
You would not think of
telling your dentist how to
pull a badly decayed tooth,
or your doctor how to take
out your appendix, but
you’re always willing to give
City Dump Closed
By State Health Dept.
Groom’s City Council re-
organized last Tuesday night
with Justice of the Peace
Max Wade officially swear-
ing in newly elected mem-
bers Jerry Thronton and
Ronny Fields and Mayor Al
Homer. Bill Homer was
elected to serve as mayor
pro tern.
Council members received
a bit of discouraging news
from Texas Department of
Health Inspector Michael
Edminton, P.E. He informed
the council that the city
dumpsite was operating in
violation of the state code
and that the dumpsite was
closed until a permit could
be secured. Getting the
permit would require soil
testing and that all refuse be
buried. Cost of securing a
permit would be in the
neighborhood of $1,100 and
would take at least one year
before a' permit could be
issued. City workers began
Wednesday morning to bury
the refuse at the dumpsite
and no further dumping will
be allowed at the site.
No decisions were made
during the meeting concern-
ing the issue other than to
look into alternatives to the
dumpsite. A contract with
BFI could be secured for a
large dumpster like that
used each May during clean-
up month in Groom, Cost of
the dumpster would be $100
per month plus and addi-
tional $250 each time the
container must be collected
by BFI. The city would
continue to charge residents
a small fee for dumping in
the dumpster like is required
now for use of the dump
ground.
The council will be decid-
ing the issue in future
meetings.
Dr. W.M. Horne of
Pampa was the low bidder to
conduct a rabies vaccination
clinic in Groom. The date of
the clinic was set for May 16
with rabies vaccinations to
cost $6 each. City ordinance
requires all pets to be
licensed and vaccinated.
Councilman John Eschle
requested the purchase of
high-low band radios in city
vehicles at a cost of $375.
The purchase was approved.
In other action, the council
voted to continue the
contract with the Carson
County Appraisal District to
collect taxes in 1987-88.
TANKS, LTD.
‘Tanks For Your Business’
me a few pointers on the
law.
You talk to me in a
manner that would assure a
bloody nose from anyone
else, but expect me to take it
without batting an eye.
You cry, “Something has
got to be done about all the
crime!” but you can’t bother
with getting involved.
You have no use for me at
all, but of course it’s okay if I
change a flat for your wife,
or deliver your child in the
back seat of my patrol car on
the way to the hospital, or
save your son’s life with
mouth-to-mouth resuscita-
tion, or work many hours
overtime looking for your
lost daughter.
So, Mister Citizen, you
stand there on your soap box
and rant and rave about the
way I do my work, calling me
every name in the book, but
never stopping to think that
your property, your family,
or maybe even your life
depends on me or one of my
buddies. Yes, Mister
Citizen, it’s me, the lousy
cop!
