Jets Team To Attend
State Championship
Groom High School
students participating in the
Jets contest will attend the
state contest this week at
Texas A & M University.
Jets means Junior
Engineering Technological
Society. Team members
compete in two of six
areas - Biology, Chemistry,
Physics, Math, English and
Computers.
Groom is one of five
schools in the state of Texas
who compete at the state
level. The other schools are
Stratford, The Science -
Engineering Magnet School
of Dallas, Yoakum High
School, and the Episcopal
Public High School in
The jury is still out on
how the new tax laws on
Texas Education will effect
Groom and other area
towns. According to
Superintendent Ken Sweatt,
the projections he has been
receiving say that we will get
an additional $435.00 per
student this fall, which
would amount to around
$80,000.00.
Mr. Sweatt stated, "every
year we see an increase of
$40,000 to $50,000 in our
total budget just for
employee cost of living,
utility increases, supply
increases, etc."
Even though this sounds
like a lot of money, in effect
it will mean little change to
the facilities or staff.
In addition, new
standards have been set for
facilities and technology.
Mr. Sweatt stated that the
school recently underwent
an evaluation of their
facilities. No report has as
of yet been released.
When asked if the new
taxing entity would do away
with the need for the
Carson County Tax
Appraisal Office he said "if
anything, it will just create
another taxing entity. Some
say that they feel the state

handle everything.
