GOLD WATCH ...
James W. Throckmorton was elected provisional
governor of Texas in 1866. As governor he had several
clashes with the reconstruction military commander,
General Philip Sheridan. Throckmorton wahted the
army to protect the frontier. Sheridan’s duty, as he saw
it, was to guard against citizen disloyalty to the Union.
On March 13, 1867, General Sheridan removed
Throckmorton from office. Throckmorton had to sell
his gold watch to pay his living expenses.
