Fields Family Celebrates
Walk Down Memory Lane
On July 28-30, 1995
ninety members and guests
in the family of Dr. and
Mrs. C.L. Fields gathered in
Groom for their annual
Fields Family Reunion.
The theme for the reunion
was "A Walk Down
Memory Lane." Hosts
included
Martha
Tom
the
Fields
Fields
families of
Wagoner,
and Henry
Fields.
Events began on Friday
evening, July 28, with a
Cousins’ Party at the home
of Bud and Connie Fields,
southwest of Groom.
Almost sixty cousins showed
up to enjoy fried turkey
cooked with a special recipe
by Fred Moseley, home
grown corn, red beans,
cornbread and all the
trimmings. Visiting
continued on through the
evening. The group also
enjoyed viewing the lighting
of the cross outside Groom,
reportedly one of the two
largest in the world, from
Bud ;
yard.
The
and Connie’s front
six remaining
"originals" of the fourteen
brothers and sisters in the
Fields clan met on Friday
evening for supper at the
Golden Spread Cafe in
Groom. The six included
Ester Fields Tinsley, Frances
Fields Moseley, Charlie
Fields, Martha Fields
Wagoner, Tom Fields and
Henry Fields. Charlie, Tom
and Henry were joined by
their wives, Nettie, Dorothy
and Koma Beryl.
On Saturday, July 29,
some of the family members
enjoyed eighteen holes of
golf at Clarendon while the
remainder began to gather
at the Groom Community
Center for a sandwich
lunch. The afternoon held
swimming and ping pong for
the children while others
enjoyed visiting and looking
through family picture
albums. By mid-afternoon,
the "Walk Down Memory
Lane" got into full swing as
Frances, Charlie and Henry
told tales of their youth and
their family while videotape
rolled to capture each
memory.
After a visit from the
Dutch Doll and Isom Cates,
supper was served. Roast,
gravy, mashed potatoes,
green beans, fresh blackeyed
peas, and hot rolls delighted
everyone’s pallet. Then the
group caravanned through a
special part of the "Walk
Thanks to the graciousness
of the Davis family who

pictures and mementos.
The box was to be opened
on Sunday.
The next stop on the
"Memory Lane Tour" was
the Groom Cemetery where
fifteen members of the
Fields family are now
buried. The group then
paused at but did not enter
the home in town that Dr.
and Mrs. Fields moved to in
1939. All the grandchildren
remember this home well.
The group returned to
the Community Center and
enjoyed more stories from
the past shared by Esther
Fields Tinsley, Martha
Fields Wagoner, and
numerous first cousins.
Cousins who shared
included Fields Smith,
Travis Tinsley, Bill Fields,
Dick Tinsley, Jack Ditto,
Fred Moseley, Rose Helen
Fields Zielke, Charles
Donald Fields, Joyce Tinsley
Williamson, Elane Wagoner
Jones, Diana Fields Hawks,
Kay Fields Henard, and
Jack Fields. Most stories
were captured on videotape
and will be edited into a
family "Walk Down Memory
Lane" for all to enjoy in
future years.
Sunday, July 30, arrived
to the smell of brewing
coffee and sausage, biscuits
and gravy as the family
gathered for the annual
business meeting followed
by the family church service.
Henry presided over the
business meeting. One of
the items of business was
the opening of the family
cornerstone box.
It’s
original contents had been
opened in 1977 and
resealed in 1978 with new
contents except for the
family Bible. The contents
were passed around for all
to see. The family decided
to place all the contents into
a lock box and start a new
box in the future.
The family church service
was led by Gary Jones and
Karen Jones Curtis. Gary
presented the inspiring
devotional. Karen led the
singing and sang a beautiful
solo of "The Lord’s Prayer."
Stacy Fields played the
piano. Lynn Jones led in
prayer. The service ended
as all sang "Blest Be the Tie
that Binds."
Family members shared
hugs, smiles, and warm
wishes as they departed to
their homes which extended
from California to Louisiana
to Mississippi. The family
looks forward to
reconvening for the 1996
Fields Family Reunion, July
26-28.
